A thoroughly liveable city, Melbourne has a buzzy vibe and an Aussie sense of fun. There’s always something going on, and one of its many festivals is Moomba – Australia’s largest free arts festival. Well worth a visit are the National Gallery of Victoria and the Melbourne Aquarium, whose highlight is walking through a clear tunnel as sharks swim over your head.
The city’s most recognisable landmark is Flinders Street Station, whose yellow and green façade matches the colour of the historic Melbourne trams that still run around the world’s longest tram network. Keep an eye out for the street art as you travel.
Shopping in Melbourne is fantastic. Queen Victoria Market is the largest open-air market south of the Equator, while the La Trobe Street shopping centre has over 300 stores. For food, don’t miss Little Italy - the Carlton area.
South of the Yarra River is St Kilda, home to the best beach and Albert Park, where the F1 Australian Grand Prix is held. However, this is not the city’s only sporting heritage. It’s also the home of Aussie Rules football and the MCG, a must-see for cricket fans.
Booking.com has a range of Melbourne accommodation from hotels to hostels and motels, some near Melbourne Airport.

"Melbourne – where the coffee is strong and so is the temptation to never leave!"
Melbourne surprised me in all the best ways. One minute you're strolling through elegant laneways lined with incredible street art, the next you're sunbathing in St Kilda or caught in a sudden downpour. (Yes, the weather does enjoy a bit of drama.)
The food scene? Top-notch. The coffee? Life-changing. And the vibe? A perfect blend of relaxed and buzzing—like the city itself can't decide whether to throw a festival or take a nap. Either way, I was here for it.
Pro tip: Always pack both sunglasses and a rain jacket. Trust me.
Already planning my return—if only to make sure the croissants in Carlton weren’t just a beautiful dream.

Melbourne is one of my favourite places, it is vibrant, colourful, there is always something going on from cafes to live shows, markets, the walks along the river, plenty of good walking, sports venues and the lively community. This time I went with a friend who had never been to Melbourne before. We did the river cruise, city loop free tram, saw a live musical, had dinner on the banks of the Yarra and walked our socks off. Our stay in inner Melbourne made everything an easy walk away.

A good transport system right from arrival at Melbourne International Airport through to free trams in Central City (or walking is just as quick sometimes), and then also to outer suburbs. Southern Cross Railway Station is a good hub for buses, trams and trains.

It is the best city in the world.
It is the best city in the world.
If you try to experience Melbourne as a place for discovery, rather than purely attending the larger tourist attractions, you’ll have an absolutely incredible time. The food is out of this world and there are so many different options. The CBD is a great area to discover things in.
It is always hard having to leave, but fortunately I’m within a two hour drive or two and a half hour train ride to Melbourne. I used to live in Melbourne for some time during my 20s into my mid-30s (am now in my late 30s) and if I hadn’t had to have moved to be closer to family I would still be living in Melbourne there without question - I would never leave voluntarily!
Melbourne has a distinctive and an uplifting, positive, strong buzz and energy about it that I haven’t experienced elsewhere. The only place close (with that type of energy) is New York, albeit a much milder version compared to what I experience in Melbourne.
Melbourne is a safe place to walk around in. The public transport is generally good, however why there isn’t a train to the airport is a bit perplexing. Melbourne is one of the few cities left in the world that have a tram network that shares the roads with cars, but it is an enormous tram network that can easily get you to wherever you want to go in the city or in the suburbs.
It is my favourite city on earth.

Attended the Rod Laver arena to see Le Mis.
Attended the Rod Laver arena to see Le Mis. Also attended a football match at the G. Both were within walking distance of the Rendezvous Hotel. Played golf a Sandringham Golf course which could have used more water. Had a great meal on the South Bank.
Suggest you buy a Myki card to travel on the tram system as seniors do not appear to get free travel like in SA

Great location for walking in all directions around Melbourne CBD. Very close to the Vic Markets and Southern Cross Station. Very clean rooms. Friendly, helpful staff. We stayed in the attached apartments building rather than the hotel so it was a bit more like an air b'n'b experience. The apartment was small but felt spacious, it was clean and comfortable for four adults.
Great location on Flinders St in Melbourne CBD with direct tram service to Australian Open outside the front door.
The Rendezvous Hotel is a grand old lady of yesteryear that retains an older style character but with a modern fresh vibe. Well appointed and comfortable.
This is our preferred accommodation in Melbourne CBD. The apartments are a really good size. Much bigger than what you get in a traditional hotel. The location is brilliant. Don’t think we could find anything better.
