A thoroughly liveable city, Melbourne has a buzzy vibe and an Aussie sense of fun. There’s always something going on, and one of its many festivals is Moomba – Australia’s largest free arts festival. Well worth a visit are the National Gallery of Victoria and the Melbourne Aquarium, whose highlight is walking through a clear tunnel as sharks swim over your head.
The city’s most recognisable landmark is Flinders Street Station, whose yellow and green façade matches the colour of the historic Melbourne trams that still run around the world’s longest tram network. Keep an eye out for the street art as you travel.
Shopping in Melbourne is fantastic. Queen Victoria Market is the largest open-air market south of the Equator, while the La Trobe Street shopping centre has over 300 stores. For food, don’t miss Little Italy - the Carlton area.
South of the Yarra River is St Kilda, home to the best beach and Albert Park, where the F1 Australian Grand Prix is held. However, this is not the city’s only sporting heritage. It’s also the home of Aussie Rules football and the MCG, a must-see for cricket fans.
Booking.com has a range of Melbourne accommodation from hotels to hostels and motels, some near Melbourne Airport.

During my family holiday in Melbourne, I booked a room at Ibis, attracted by their claim on Booking.com that the hotel offered parking. However, after arriving, I found all the hotel parking spaces were full. The staff directed me to use 58 Franklin Street Parking, claiming they had an agreement with the facility, and instructed me to bring the parking ticket for a discount voucher.
The next morning, I was shocked to discover that my car's window had been smashed, and belongings worth $7,000 were stolen. Repairing the broken glass cost me an additional $600, even after opting for the cheapest replacement. This was a deeply distressing experience, especially as I had never encountered such incidents while visiting Sydney.
The police officers who responded took photographs and informed me that such thefts are common in Melbourne’s CBD. This left me questioning what proactive measures law enforcement is taking if these incidents occur so frequently. Their response was limited to advising me to contact my insurance provider, which further added to my frustration. This experience made us feel unsafe in Melbourne and significantly marred our visit.

I love Melbourne as the best city in Australia for a short break. It has a vibe that is unequalled anywhere else. With tons of shopping, endless restaurants to suit all budgets, museums, art galleries, sporting venues, there really is something to please everybody. Tying all this together is the excellent free tram system which means you don't have to wear yourself out when getting around town.

Love the easy access via the tram network.. the all day restaurants suits us , although we were bitterly disappointed that we returned to South Yarra to go to the Pacific BBQ to be turned away at the door, even though the “open” sign was in the window and the advertised site said open to 9pm , evidently they decided to close the kitchen until 4.30pm … totally within their rights but we travelled past lots of other open restaurants to attend Pacific BBQ which has always been a favourite of ours on our many visits to Melbourne. The Shanghai Flower in the CBD was top notch

Only a week before Christmas, so lots happening and shops open longer. Tram tickets always confusing - why not just tap on and off for every trip - a smart system can then work out if it should charge me $0 or a fare.

Weather was so changeable in summer, freezing one day, super-hot the next. The place is really spread out and expensive. There's lots to see and do but I did none of that and just enjoyed time with my family.

Best base from which to explore Melbourne. Apartments are huge and have balconies with expansive views over Flagstaff Gardens and the city skyline. In so many other CBD hotels you just feel boxed in. Love being able to walk 10 mins for a breakfast with the locals in North Melbourne, or, walk 10 mins to Hardware Lane to catch a bus that will have you in Lygon St, Carlton, or the top of Smith and Brunswick streets in Collingwood/Fitzroy in under 20
mins. This is what Melbourne is all about: discoveries around every corner!
Our preferred mid-budget accommodation in Melbourne CBD. Very short walks to restaurants, cinemas, theatres, art galleries, etc. Comfortable spacious apartments with separate bedroom, lounges and well-provisioned kitchenette. Plenty of storage space for longer stays. Some upper floor apartments have city views. Reception staff are exceptional - very friendly and helpful.
The deal with parking was great as was easily the cheapest hotel parking in the area we found, and breakfast included - great value for our budget. So close to Marvel Stadium without being in Docklands which was the reason for our stay, but also just a quick walk to Southbank or the Spencer St Outlet if you don't want to deal with the CBD (like us)! Staff were lovely too.
Situated perfectly in close proximity to Melbourne CBD. This newly built Hotel really does accommodate. Very modern with chic furnishings. The buffet breakfast with the city views is a must.
Opposite train station , great for overnight visit to Melbourne good access to CBD and then on to airport. Hotel happy to check baggage in early and hold after checkout. Good breakfast
