Open-plan and open-minded, Cambridge is best known for university colleges dating to the 13th century. King’s College is the most popular, and its chapel choir is internationally famous. Although accessed from cobbled King’s Parade, it is best viewed from a punt on The Backs, the part of the River Cam behind.
Cambridge punting is an institution and gives great views of Queen’s College Mathematical Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs at St John’s College. Upstream is Jesus Green, site of an outdoor pool and a fantastic beer festival. Next to this is Midsummer Common, a park home to the annual Strawberry Fair (and the occasional cow). Opposite are the college boathouses - get up early to see the rowers in action!
Cows also roam the Mill Pond meadow, where the river leads south to Grantchester, a quaint village with a lovely cafe. Places to eat in Cambridge include riverside restaurants and typical English pubs like The Eagle, drinking hole of DNA founders Watson & Crick.
Cambridge shopping options include a daily market (in Market Square), the Grafton Centre and the exclusive Grand Arcade, the latest addition. The Scott Polar Museum and free Fitzwilliam Museum are 2 of many fantastic Cambridge museums.
Stansted Airport is connected by train to the city’s accommodation choices on Booking.com.
Cambridge is an outstanding city. It is beautiful, the colleges and their grounds are stunning. The architecture is impressive, there are great museums to visit, a very good shopping area and a plethora of good cafes and restaurants. It's great to walk along the River Cam and see the rowers out or experience punting. We didn't go, but we understand there's an ice rink too.

Used The Mitre pub for our first evening then The Boatman a local pub for the rest of the break. Found the town prices very high to what we are used to. Need to watch the cyclists they do not appear to adhere to any rules.

Fascinating city to visit, and with so much to explore, some planning will be very useful: e.g. museums are excellent, but closed on Monday. Driving and parking in the city is very restricted, but park and ride services are excellent, so if staying outside Cambridge, stay close to a park and ride depot.

We visited St John's College and the kids enjoyed a go on the outside rowing machine and we punted on the Cam avoiding the drizzle. Cambridge was full of character, great book shops, great shops, lots of eateries and we ended up in a pub (as we were eating at inbetween times for food at cafes/restaurants) and it was a theatre themed one just off the main square with free shuffleboard and we ate in a converted barrel...great little find! Wish we'd come on Friday and stayed for two nights as so much to see/do. We visited the cathedral in Ely on the way down and climbed the Octagon Tower which was amazing though not great for me without a head for heights. Also ate in the Almonry Restaurant which has a vaulted cellar - perfect afternoon tea and service in a fabulous setting. Couldn't fault it except we just ran out of time.

I was attending a specific function for Alumni of my College...
I was attending a specific function for Alumni of my College in the University. However, for general visitors there is much of interest to see in the second-oldest University in England. Apart from the Colleges themselves, most of which can be visited for a small charge, and with architecture ranging from the thirteenth to the twenty-second century, there are many civic buildings as well as museums and galleries, such as the Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettles Yard.. One day is not enough to see it all! There are also pursuits such as punting on the River Cam (and Granta), as well as riverside walks both up and downstream. There is further interest to be had in the villages and countryside around Cambridge: the Imperial War Museum Aircraft at Duxford, Oliver Cromwell’s Birthplace in Huntingdon, the cathedral at Ely, Rupert Brooke’s Granchester, the festival of Morris Dancing at Thetford (annual event), and much else…. Within Cambridge itself, the City Centre is compact and mostly pedestrianised, elsewhere the local buses are pretty efficient.
NB. Ccar Parking in Cambridge is pretty horrendous and very expensive, but a very good alternative is the Park-and-Ride arrangement : Three separate parking places round the outskirts of Cambridge with frequent buses into the centre (and stops along the routes) at £3.00 return, flat rate fares. Brilliant!

Our superior room was beautifully decorated and had some little extra touches that made it quite special. For example, the lovely proper teapot and cups and saucers ... very welcoming after a day out walking around Cambridge. Also the accent vases and cushions, etc. .... it felt like we were staying in a fine home rather than a hotel with items secured to tables and walls. The weekend breakfast buffet was one of the best we have ever had, while the regular breakfast table service on the Monday was also very excellent.
We have stayed at this hotel many times over the ten years that we were associated with Cambridge University. The hotel has an exceptional location, close to the best parts of town, but also close to the river and Jesus Green. It feels like home away from home. Unexpectedly, this time we also had a balcony which was much appreciated and had excellent views. Had a lovely celebratory meal at Six Brasserie. We also really like the roof top bar.
Lovely hotel. Nice clean room, staff were friendly and nice breakfast was included. 20 ish minute walk into city centre so ideal place to stay to explore. On site parking was very handy and they let us park there all day before we even checked in. Would definitely stay again if we came back to Cambridge.
I had a nice room at the back of the hotel overlooking the car park. The breakfast, although continental, was good. Car parking in Cambridge city centre is expensive so I didn't mind paying to use their car park for convenience and peace of mind.
