Excellent location in centre of Barnard Castle. A stones throw from Witham centre where we were seeing a play.
Parking available on street or in local Morrisons.
Room very comfortable with king size bed.
Breakfast was superb. Cereal/fruit/juice on buffet bar then a freshly cooked hot dish from a very extensive menu.
Located in the picturesque hamlet of Greta Bridge, this traditional and peaceful 4-star AA hotel is in a beautiful location close to the Tees Valley and Yorkshire Dales.

The hotel is a country house style hotel with some charming features such as the cosy log fire and wonderful wall murals in the Dickens bar. We chose to eat in here as it had a more relaxed vibe than the Gilroy restaurant. The twin bedroom itself was a little outdated in style but the bathroom was clean, spacious and up to date. Dinner was taken in the cosy Dickens bar area but we were able to choose items from the more extensive Gilroy restaurant menu. Good choice of hot cooked breakfast as well as continental breakfast options. Staff were all warm and welcoming. Time spent in the Garage Spa was good value for money too.

We were delighted when we arrived here. Can't fault it. The owners kindly left fresh provisions in the fridge - handy as we arrived later in the eve. The bed was very comfortable and the condition of the apartment was fabulous. The heating and hot water were as good as you find in a new build - always good in the winter months. We visited the local pub the next day and had a wander and both were well worth it. I am sure we will return when next on our travels as the only downside was we didn't have enough time here. By the way, the smart TV is a great addition so you can even watch your favourite Netflix and curl up with a hot chocolate on the comfy sofa. We had the top floor apartment. I left my scarf which is being posted back to me kindly by the owners :-)

We very much enjoyed staying at The Cricketers Arms. Our room was well laid out with a very comfortable bed and spacious en-suite bathroom. Our welcoming host helped carry our bags to our room. Despite overlooking the fairly busy road, there was no traffic noise. There were nice little touches in the room such as a fan should it get too warm and a small heater should the temperature drop. We didn't need either but it was nice to see that they'd been provided.
Parking the car was also easy as we got a (free) place in the street right outside. There is no food at the pub but we found a great fish and chip shop just down the road that fitted the bill!
Barnard Castle is an interesting town with some lovely little shops. The nearby Bowes Museum is fascinating and well worth a visit.

Barnard castle is an interesting country town.
Barnard castle is an interesting country town. It seemed quite bustling to us. There are a number of interesting shops and it appears to have a thriving antiques industry. You can visit the centrally located ruined castle and the huge Bowes Museum is also fairly easy to walk to. The museum also has a large car park, cafe and shop.
The town's location is easily accessible from the A66 and not far from the A1M. If travelling from the west, it's about 45 minutes from Penrith and the M6.

There was plenty of shops and cafes, Bowes museum was excellent, take time to explore the town too by looking beyond the high street and venturing up the alleyways and read about the towns history. There are plenty of walks so take hiking boots.

A pleasant little market town, the surrounding area is beautiful, especially Teesdale. Bowes Museum is in Barnard Castle and is well worth a visit, expect to spend the whole day there! High Force, Low Force and the Bowlees visitor centre are a short drive away and we would recommend visiting them. We stayed there on a Monday and Tuesday, a lot of eating places were closed those days. We did have, by chance, a great meal at the Three Horseshoes Hotel, it's a shame it's so far away from us!

The town itself is compact but offers a lot to see - from the Witham Centre, shops, cafes and pubs. The crown has to be the Bowes Museum - a truly wonderful gallery and museum in a striking building - a French chateau in the depths of Teesdale.
