The property was clean (except for overpowering fake pineapple deodoriser in the hallway). Lack of care when setting up family rooms (missing cups, teens expected to sleep on toddler size mattresses although booking stated age of family members)
Ideally situated, family-run Wheatland Lodge Hotel offers good value accommodation, just a 5-minute walk from York Train Station and a 10-minute walk from York's historic centre.

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.
Very interesting city with lots to see and do. Plenty of places to eat. Easy to walk around plus the city hop on/ off bus is great for getting an overview of the area and also learn about some of the history of York. The Railway Museum is free and the Science Gallery inside ( payment for this) was a big hit with my two grandchildren. Roadworks in York atm mean taxis are slow to get around but fair in their charging.

Only knew of York because my daughter studied abroad and went here on a field trip. The church there was breath taking the Shamble Market was so incredibly cool, and the shop area was like walking into Harry Potter. It was such a great experience! Wish we would have had a chance to walk the wall but it closes early.

Loads of places to visit, couldn't do it all in a weekend.
Loads of places to visit, couldn't do it all in a weekend. Lovely buildings, churches, cathedral etc. Ghost walk is a must in the evening.
Loads of independent shops and craft stalls in the high street.
Lovely steak restaurant just over called rio's I think just near the bridge next to the hotel. £30 unlimited salad bar and steak/meat. They come round to your table with spikes of different meat. Was so nice that we dined there both evenings.

At the time of my visit it was the first one of 2 half-term Scottish school holidays so very busy. My friend said that there would be 3 consecutive half-term holidays ( 2 from Scotland and 1 local) and this is why it was so busy. However, York is wonderful. We had no trouble getting a table for eating out (although I had booked Nola some weeks previous to my visit...I can wholeheartedly recommend eating out at Nola it is brilliant, food, wine & service excellent). Had a good trip to Castle Howard; bit rainy but the house and grounds are amazing. We had an absolutely delicious lunch in the cafe at Castle Howard, and the farm shop is fabulous with lots of local produce. I had got tickets for the light show in York Minster; this was about the fire of 1984. Very informative but York Minster always worth a visit as the building is awesome. A different evening we had a meal at Fancy Hank's and I can thoroughly recommend this eatery too. The centre of York was quite congested due to roadworks and a lot of cars. I wish people would just not take their car into York but use park & ride. In any case, lots of places are within easy walking distance. No trip to York is complete without a trip to The York Ghost Merchants. I decided to got to the shop in St Anthony's gardens (very lovely it is) rather than the Shambles which gets a bit congested. I didn't have to queue very long and got some more ghosties to add to my collection..Go! It's brilliant! I also visited the Cat Gallery dedicated to all things feline! If you're a cat lover this is a must! Didn't get around to the chocolate tour but will do this next time.

York seems to get busier each time I visit.
York seems to get busier each time I visit. Not keen on crowds and with half term it was teeming. Managed to visit a few things I seem to have missed before. The Good bus tour was fun with the driver's own additions.
Found some new eating places too. Recommend Mama Mia on Gillygate for lovely Italian food and great service .
Found Kalpakavadi on Fossgate on our last visit so returned with all the family (11 of us) for a 70th birthday . Excellent food and unusual choices and great service. We will be back on our next visit.

Didn’t have breakfast as 50.00 for 2 seemed a little excessive and had a nice breakfast close to hotel for half the price.
The staff were very friendly professional and helpful particular the door men who helped with parking.
The room was huge for a city centre hotel and very comfortable with small details appreciated like Milton brown toiletries and Yorkshire shortbread fab bathroom too
The location. It's right in the middle of York city centre. The onsite parking (£25 per day). How lovely the staff were. The view from the window (optional extra at a charge) Air Conditioning in the bedrooms. Breakfast is buffet style, vegan sausages available as well. I really can't rate this hotel highly enough and we will be returning soon!
Friendly staff, easy check in process. Room was clean and comfortable. WiFi good. Price seems in line with comparable hotels in York. The location is a short walk (10-15 minutes) from the main hustle and bustle of the city centre.
Great location just outside York City Centre. Value for money. Great breakfast. Clean room. Excellent staff and customer service honestly best staff I’ve seen at a hotel for a long time.
