To climb the vulcano in daytime no need for a guide.
To climb the vulcano in daytime no need for a guide. For the sunset if the sky is clear no guide needed. But if it is cloudy and night - get a guide.
Extremly loud city due to the crazy motobikers.

i thought Berastagi is a nice and cool place to rest after climbing down Mt Sibayak. you can enjoy some local foods at night along the main street, have some best coffees and ginger tea..if you're into chinese noodles..you may have it near the market..for those who like fresh milk from the barn, yoghurt, cheese or dairy products...go to Gundaling..about 20- 30 mins from Central Berastagi.

Definitely do the small trek to Gunung Sibayak.
Definitely do the small trek to Gunung Sibayak. It's totally worth it just for the natural scenery and the volcanic craters, and lucky you if you can catch the sunrise there, though it's usually foggy early in the morning. (You can do the trek without a guide, but you have to arrange your transport, which isn't much cheaper than the guide). Check out the hot springs as well, they're very nice and relaxing, and the surroundings are very pretty. Besides this, there's a nice Buddhist Temple, a Karo Church, a Ghost Town(near Gunung Sinabung) all within 30 minutes bike ride from the centre which are all worth a visit. Within the town, do check out the local markets, and you'll see a lot of fresh Indonesian produce you might not have ever heard of. The people are all super nice too, and they'll usually let you(or rather, insist that you) try some. Finally, if you're up for an hour long bike ride, do check out Sipiso-Piso waterfall, one of the tallest in Asia. The hike down is worth it. Though if you're planning to go to Lake Toba via private transport, you can stop there on your way.
PS: Stay at Smiley's Homestay. They're lovely people who'll make you feel right at home <3

Berastagi is perfect for a stop over between Ketambe/Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba. Actually the city is not very nice but people are friendly and the landscape around is impressive. There are two volcanos for trekking and hot springs
Beristagi accommodation that suited me was difficult to find - limited options - but I made a very good choice with Hotel Dieng. Right in town just around the corner from the very busy main road Jalan Veteran. It took me a little while (2nd day) to find my way around, and that the good safe food and great coffee is up the hill close to the fruit and veg market on Jalan Veteran. The Giant Cabbage Monument is your hotel homing beacon - made it easy to find my street. Also my room (No. 6) was soooo quiet!! Well priced. Would stay here again.
Pariban Hotel is a new modern hotel located near the Hotsprings of Semangat Gunung. It's a good location for those planning on a hike up to Mount Sibayak or a resting place for the weary traveller with its Hotsprings sprawled in this tiny village. As of my last visit, there is still a lot of renovation and infrastructure happening with new villas and roadworks on the way. Despite that, Pariban Hotel has good service staff, spacious rooms with very tall ceilings and essential facilities that makes this stay a comfortable one.
Host was extremely helpful! Explained everything about what there is to do, showed us a map, told us normal prices so we don't get scammed etc. He was very helpful every time we had a question. Simply amazing. He also went to find out if other guests wanted to share a taxi with us to split costs, just really helpful.
Host joined us on the mount Sibayak tour and was very nice and helpful and explained lots of things like a real tour guide! Amazing experience. Also affordable price for the tour which is great, great value.
The Sapo Karo Rest House is exceptionally welcoming. We had only one day and wanted to see the volcano, hot springs and get transfer to Medan. We managed to plan everything in advanced through WhatsApp, and ended up seeing beautiful sunrise from the top of volcano. During the drive to Medan we stopped for great Javanese meal, and driver from rest house gave us good advice for better stay in Medan (after encounter with bad hotel in Medan). It was our best short stay during visit of Sumatra. Thanks again :)
What a fantastic stay in Berastagi! Smiley and his family were so friendly and welcoming, making me feel at home away from home :) Smiley truly knows Sumatra by heart and gave me great insights where the best spots were and how to get there. Glad I stayed here in the beginning of my trip. The volcano-hike was so nice! The bed was also the most comfortable I had in a long time! The breakfast was also amazing :) Highly recommend this place!
The location is great. Easy to walk into Berastagi centre. The room was large and the bed was comfortable. The wi-fi signal was surprisingly strong. I was a little hot but that’s a me thing. My English-speaking hosts are just exceptional. They couldn’t have been more helpful, arranging a volcano hike tailored to my limited mobility needs. They also arranged a shared taxi to Lake Toba. The breakfast (banana pancake) was delicious.
The location is good. Right at the center of berastagi. There is an impressive garden at the ground door which feel like walking in a tropical forest. Every corner of the hotel is well decorated to detail and in a nature style. The room is clean. The double bed is super big even for two persons. I am surprised to find such a nice hotel in a small town like berastagi and at such a reasonable price.
Berastagi.
The property is out of the city, but in exchange, you can get cooler cleaner air quality and serenity.
Plus, they served good food.
Thank you Keith and crew for a memorable stay.
Ttavel tip : A hike to the volcano and ghost town is a must when you're in Berastagi.
Very relaxed hotel and very friendly staff. I found it to be very handy for the town centre. Just a little walk to the market and restaurants. Also very handy for climbing the volcano as the bus stops right outside the entrance. I really liked it here.
The location is strategic, in front of 2 major hotels and resort. A lot of restaurants can be found within walking distance. The house is still well-maintained, not damp, probably because it gets a lot of morning sunshine. Bathrooms are clean.
This house can accommodated my whole family while we are enjoying our vacation in Berastagi.
There were 4 bedrooms, TV, chairs, complete cooking utensils, refrigerator, water-heater, it really helps us.
Wonderful hosts and super helpful.
Tour to volcano was great. They also helped us join in with 2 other travelers to visit a beautiful waterfall and Lake Toba before our return trip to Medan.
Best hotel/guesthouse in my whole Indonesia trip. The room and bathroom were very clean. The owner is super friendly and helpful. Can really recommend this place!!
location is not bad, but please keep it in your mind that big mosque locates very close from hotel. Hotel stuffs are very kind and speak in quite good English.
Lovely garden to explore and play with kids after a long drive. Made us a box breakfast as we left at 4:30 to climb Sibayak. Comfortable rooms and beds.
