We liked the old world charm of the building. The room was cold at first but gradually warmed up over a couple of hours. We didn’t like the coffee maker and the cups. Very small cups of tea. We later found a kettle on the landing but we hadn’t been told about it.
The dining room was cold and not very inviting. Also beware, if you are not good with steep stairs, this may not be for you. There are stairs everywhere. I know it’s because the building is very old. We had emailed previously that we are vegan but when we went to breakfast, we were given one tomato, one mushroom , a small pot of beans, a few fried potatoes and a small piece of fried bread. We didn’t get any toast, although in hindsight, we should have asked. Same on the second day except we asked for toast and received some but with no spread. On looking around, I could see that other people received sausages and eggs etc. So it looks like nobody has thought it through and just didn’t include the animal bits. It would not be hard to keep some vegan sausages in the freezer for vegan guests. You can even get portions of scrambled tofu. We felt like second class citizens. The homemade marmalade is, I’m afraid not marmalade. It is a sugary liquid with bits of orange sitting in it.
The staff were friendly and great with the dogs. It’s lovely to find somewhere so tolerant with pets when we feel that they are members of the family.
The cobwebs on the dining room windowsill are possibly left over from Halloween. If you leave them, you could spray them silver for Christmas🤣. All this being said, we would stay again when we are visiting our son. Just, could we have a nice breakfast with some vegan spread for our toast. Especially as we are paying the same rate as the carnivores.

The sole reason of visiting Harwich was to take the car ferry to the Hook of Holland. We walked around Harwich town before leaving and were quite disappointed to see it was run down. There didn’t seem to be many bright spots there, so no reason to return.

Once you find your way around there is plenty to keep you busy and entertained. The town is steeped in maritime and political history, which is well documented at the museum, where entrance is modestly priced. Harwich and the adjoining Dovercourt are accessible on foot. There is a park for children to play in and stretches of sand; plus a promenade for families and mobility scooter users to enjoy the sea air. Buses do exist but you need to check the timetable. Trains from Harwich Town station run regularly. Taxis are easily booked. Parking is good. Solo travellers feel safe. There are several hotels, cafes and take-aways for eating, though opening hours need to be checked. You can book sea trips from the harbour. I recommend the town for adults and children alike.

We found Harwich to be clean and litter free. Easy and close access to shops, station, harbour, pier and places of interest. People were very polite and friendly. Nowhere was crowded, quite the opposite.

A fascinating town full of history and compact enough to amble around in comfort. Great views at the hotel and quayside and pleasing open spaces near the lighthouses. A great mix of old world charm and modern industry on the waterfront. We enjoyed the various museums and the redout fortification.

There is a range of attractions to suit all tastes.
There is a range of attractions to suit all tastes. If you like history, there are self guided audio trails, museums devoted to the naval history and military signficance of the napoleonic and first and second world war. I came for the photographic opportunities, with massive container ships, sailing boats and the potential for glorious sunrises over the ocean. It does look a bit run down in places and I was a bit apprehensive, but everyone was very friendly, and I would sum it up as an unspoilt gem, from an earlier, more relaxed era.

Mike at reception and Caroline at breakfast were simply amazing and made me feel incredibly welcome. Please ensure that they recieve my sincere thanks for their warm welcome and amazing service! Mike knew i had to get up and out early to catch the ferry, so breakfast would need to be fast, he relayed this onto Caroline who prioritised me and this kind of service is what makes a hotel stand out from the rest! Thank you very much Mike and Caroline.
The breakfast was very tasty, i wished i had more time to enjoy it, so please thank the chef too.
I use the place whenever travelling from Holland to Harwich on the ferry. It's a first, enojyable contact with the British way of life. The rooms are clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. Just downstairs is a restaurant that serves good food at a very reasonable price. Service is speedy in the evening and at breakfast. There's a good selevction of beers at the bar, again at very reasonable prices.
