The Players Golf Club, hotel in Dyrham

Set in Bristol, 20 km from Royal Crescent, The Players Golf Club offers accommodation with a shared lounge, free private parking, a terrace and a bar.

It's all about the location, there's not much else to like. Breakfast was decent, but having paid £130 for what felt like a glorified shed, I wasn't expecting to pay for it.

Cross Hands Hotel by Greene King Inns, hotel in Dyrham

Just minutes from junction 18 of the M4, Cross Hands Hotel is a charming 14th-century posting house with a pub and restaurant, in the heart of the Gloucester countryside.

My room was fantastic. A huge, very comfy bed, with extra pillows in the wardrobe (& iron, ironing board and hairdryer). Shower room was clean and fairly recently refurbished. Breakfast - lots of choice and very good. Location was great, easy to find and plenty of parking.

Beautiful little quaint village, great walks on the Cotswold way and through the deer park. Amazing Dyrham House and grounds to explore. Ideal for cycling and horse riding. Some great pubs in the neighbouring villages, and some lovely cafes nearby
