Our host was extremely welcoming and the property was absolutely charming. The room was elegant and spacious with a great deal of character. We travelled with our spaniel and he too was made to feel a very welcome dog. Breakfast was delicious and extensive.

Just a 20-minute drive from historic Durham, The Royal Oak is a family-run hotel offering a traditional restaurant, a bar, and free Wi-Fi throughout. The hotel has wonderful views of the County Durham countryside.

The Royal Oak doesn't look like anything special from the outside, but don't be fooled by that - the room we had was large, clean and comfortable with lovely views over open fields. It was one of the best places we stayed during our six-week tour, and we would have liked to have had more than one night there. The beds and pillows were just right, and it was quiet overnight so we got a good night's sleep. We had a very good evening meal and breakfast in the pub. The landlady was friendly and helpful, and even got two burly lads at the bar to take our suitcases upstairs for us!

Friendly welcome and attention staff. Very comfortable rooms and lovely shower. The children loved the room and bunk beds. Some comments mention noise from the bar but we didn't find this a problem.

olde world charm mixed with modern facilities but it was the people, both staff and customers, that made our stay memorable. Host Kerry demonstrated that nothing was too much trouble. Customers Joe, Davy and Graham provided interesting, and often hilarious, craic. A great range of beers in the bar and a sumptuous breakfast rounded off a great stay.

Jane was lovely and gave us a warm welcome. The pod was extremely comfortable, clean and had all the amenities we needed to an exceptionally high standard. The jacuzzi was a luxurious touch to an already luxury pod. We even had fresh eggs from the chickens on-site. The owners have done a wonderful job with this pod- thank you again.

We were made very welcome. The location was superb - off the main Durham to Consett road, down a long private drive. Our rooms were excellent and breakfast the next morning was lovely and provided at a time to suit us. We would happily choose to stay here again and will recommend it to our friends and family.

Keith, the owner, went out of his way to help us. We had been delayed in traffic and had missed our dinner booking at the local Italian restaurant. Keith called the restaurant and asked them to provide us with a takeaway, and then he cleared a space at his kitchen table for us to enjoy our supper. He was absolutely charming and a great host.

Great location but still private and secluded. The rooms are massive and the entire property is steeped in history. The personal service from Phil was outstanding. We wouldn't hesitate to book again.
