About Hoi An

Including tips for the best time to visit Hoi An

You'd be forgiven for thinking you'd stepped back in time during a stroll through Hoi An, a coastal city in central Vietnam. The former port, which saw trading between China, Europe and Japan between the 15th and 19th centuries, is as atmospheric as ever. In the pedestrian-only Ancient Town, lanterns illuminate close-knit buildings, merchant shop-houses and pagodas, all of which are extremely well-preserved.

Nearly every corner of UNESCO-listed Hoi An seems picture-worthy, but a few landmarks stand out, including the city's Japanese Covered Bridge. The Hoi An Museum of History & Culture is worth a few hours' time to see pre-Cham artefacts and ceramics, as are the handful of assembly halls – places where expat Chinese communities could gather – built here in the 1700s. Stop by the Assembly Hall of the Chaozhou Chinese Congregation to take in intricate wooden carvings and stone sculptures.

Crafts are among Hoi An's greatest exports. During a visit to Thanh Ha Pottery Village, you can witness artisans firing earthenware in kilns and sample My Quang noodles – the neighbourhood's signature dish. At Kim Bong woodworking village, carpenters craft furniture, boats and housewares. Hoi An is perhaps most famous for its textiles and the local tailors that have been sewing and selling bespoke clothes here for centuries.

While exploring Hoi An, don't miss a visit to one of its famous nearby landmarks. The My Son ruins, a collection of Hindu temples dating back to the 13th century, offer a unique glimpse into early Vietnam's past.

Great place and it oozes positive energy. The place is magical in evenings, walk on the streets, enjoy Vietnamese coffee, get some clothes custom made and enjoy the awesome show at Hoi An Memory Land.

Hoi An is a lovely little ancient town that still captures the essence of what it once was. The town is full of lots of tailor shops, Bao Diep was my shop of choice which was a amazing experience in itself - but there are loads to choose from, and the closer you walk towards the river, theirs lots of souvenir shops. It’s a great town to take a step back out of the usual busy Vietnam you can potter around and just browse shops for hours. At night Hoi An changes and the night market is wonderful to browse. Definitely get a lantern boat at night - amazing experience and relatively cheap too, perfect for couples. Food wise you have to try morning glory original and madam khanh bahn mi - two highlights for food for me

Our family loved Hoi An.

19 September 2024

Our family loved Hoi An. It had a clean, safe feeling and it was so vibrant and colourful. We enjoyed riding the free bikes provided by our hotel out to the beach and around the market areas and surrounding streets and the atmosphere in the evening was incredible. We visited the beach, Marble Mountain, Monkey moutain, My Son, BaNa hills, did a cooking class, went in a banana boat and fishing boat, rode bikes, wandered around the night markets and had clothes made at the tailors. We stayed for 6 nights but could have easily stayed longer.

Nice small old town.

Nice small old town. Perfect to walk around with no rush. It may get over crowded at times but overall great stay and worth visiting to stay a few days. I did a day trip to the islands and scuba diving which was also great to have at hand from there.

Hoi An is a must if you visit Vietnam, it is 30 km from Danang, so very easy to reach by motorbike or car, it is just less than an hour. The old city is as it was 100 years ago, very clean and it has all the amenities, shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants. If you are in Hoi An, just visit the tourist attractions around the city and spend time in the city during the evening/night, the boats in the river with the candles ON make it really beautiful.

A frantic, crazy, fun town.

A frantic, crazy, fun town. Main centre is made of very old buildings with loads of character. Seems Hoi An is the capital city of tailors, bespoke leather goods and friendly service. So many restaurants and all we ate in were superb. Download the 'grab' app for Uber like services that were fast, friendly and inexpensive. You can hire scooters and push bikes too, if you’re brave enough 😀
