Zao Onsen
Set in Zao Onsen and only 200 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Takasagoya Ryokan offers accommodation with city views, free WiFi and free private parking. A public bath is available for guests. The ryokan features family rooms. everything, their excellent hospitality, delicious food, affordable rate and the free onsen nearby is unbeatable. Definitely I’ll go back again
Tendo Onsen, Tendo
The ryokan offers soothing natural hot spring bath in natural stone tubs and an open-air hot springs bath. A shared lounge features a tatami (woven-straw) floor and view of a Japanese garden. The ryokan also offers free use of bicycles. Great rooms. We had both Japanese dinner and breakfast... what a treat!! The staff was wonderful as well. From the women's onsen you can see a cherry tree, and it happened to be in bloom! It was a truly extraordinary experience and worth the money.
Matsushima
Featuring free property-wide WiFi, a spa centre and a seasonal outdoor pool, Matsushima Ichinobo offers accommodation in Matsushima. The ryokan has a hot spring bath and sauna, and guests can enjoy a drink at the bar. Free private parking is available on site. Everything is amazing. It is expensive, but you get what you pay. I recommend staying for at least 2 nights. I stayed for only one night, and I think I could have enjoyed more (like the gardens and the free rental bike service) if I had more time. Having said that,I thoroughly enjoyed my bedroom, the lounge, restaurant, the baths. The free all you can eat ice cream in the lounge was also a positive surprise.
Aizuwakamatsu
Japanese-style rooms have a tatami (woven-straw) floor and traditional futon bedding, while Western rooms come with beds and an en suite bathroom. All rooms are air-conditioned and fitted with an LCD TV and a fridge. This is a Japanese traditional hotel. The hosts are very friendly and try to help all the time. Although it is sometimes not easy to communicate in English, but they tried their best to understand us and also express themselves. Actually with Google Translator there is no communication issues anymore. My room is the one with private bathroom but still I can use the big bath outside the room, which is very comfortable. The dinner and breakfast are wonderful!! I would be very happy to stay here next time if I visit this city again.
Mount Haguro, Tsuruoka
Surrounded by sacred mountains and untouched nature, Tamonkan is housed in a historic Japanese-style building. Complimentary tea and snacks are served to welcome guests. Dewa Shrine is located an 8-minute walk away. Free WiFi is available in all areas. What a great find this place was. A very traditional Japanese guest house with ultra friendly and accommodating hosts. This property has been in their family for generations and they go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. The meals were excellent and there was an English explanation for each dish served 😊. A big bonus is the short walk to the stairs to climb Mt Haguro. (Not that that makes the stairs any easier!) We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay here!
Zao Onsen
Located within a 10-minute walking distance from the Zao Sky Cable aerial lift, Miyamaso Takamiya features 9 natural hot spring baths for guests to enjoy. The wooden structure of the property portrays a traditional Japanese-style accommodation. Free Wi-Fi is available at the lobby. An exceptional and authentic experience. The food was delicious, the staff was so welcoming and professional. This place heals your body and soul. 12/10!! We will be back for sure, recommended!!!
Tsunagi Onsen, Morioka
At Shikitei Morioka TsunagiOnsen Ryokan, guests can relax in the outdoor/indoor hot spring baths or get a soothing massage at a surcharge. Luggage storage service is available at the front desk and a gift shop and drinks vending machines can also be found on site. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. You won't have any problems even if you don't speak Japanese. The shared bath was very nice but the highlight for me was the private onsen, going in and out of the onsen while enjoying the night sky all night was a really nice experience. The food was exceptional, both dinner and breakfast.
Yuzawa

Kaminoyama Onsen, Kaminoyama
Situated in Kaminoyama, 17 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Oyado Morinone offers accommodation with a sauna, a hot spring bath and a public bath. With garden views, this accommodation provides a balcony. The ryokan features rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. This was the most elegant and restful stay of my life. Food is incredible - deserves a bib gourmand! Rooms are large and comfortable with a view. Onsen is lovely. The best is the free alcohol and hot drink service in the evenings around the fireplace. Definitely stay here if you can! It’s once in a lifetime type stuff
Matsushima
Boasting a garden and a shared lounge, Hotel Ubudo is located in Matsushima and is 900 metres from Entsuin Temple. The property is close to several noted attractions, around a 5-minute walk from Matsushima Fish Market and around 600 metres from Godaido Temple. Shiogama Fish market is 6 km from the hotel and Zuigan-ji Temple is a 10-minute walk away. We like everything about the hotel.

Very nice ryokan, with good private and public onsen available. The room was more than enough, with fresh towels and yukata each day I stayed. The staff were very nice, and I was able to ask them about certain things with combinations of English, Japanese and translation apps. I got injured before coming here sp the location is a bit far away from things, but very close to the station (2 minutes?). Note: not a negative as I chose this location because of the location originally.
We stayed in the annex, in a room overlooking the Aga River. It was incredibly beautiful to see that view every day. The room was well-equipped, with comfortable futon, yukata, bathroom, fridge and onsen amenities. The large public bath and rotenburo in the main hotel were excellent.
The ryokan is really traditionnal and super cool to sleep and have lunch in. The classic tatami rooms and onsens are a must ! It's a delight after a quite hike in the park to chill around in the facilities. There's even an onsen on the roof that we did not try because we checked in too late so we didn't get the info haha Great surprise was also the adaptability to vegan travelers : they made us a fully vegan breakfast that was super good and filling so thanks for that !
Traditional style accommodation, gives you the chance to sleep in a futon on the tatami, wear a yukata, and utilise shared bathroom facility, or sento. It is worth the experience 😊 it's reasonably close to Hiraizumi station (about 10 minutes walk) and the host very kindly tried to accomodate for my vegan requirements for breakfast. Bathroom and toilets were clean.
Location is great. Onsen is spacious. Outdoor onsen is good. Restaurant serves reasonably priced food. Nice Japanese style room with futons and yukata.
The hotel was really great for the price. Everything is traditional Japanese; tatami everywhere and you take your shoes off right at the entrance rather than walking to your room with them. Onsen is not tattoo-friendly so I did not use, but I went to Yamagata one day to use the hot spring there instead. Breakfast was terrific, with many small plates to try lots of the food of Sendai. The staff was extremely helpful, and gave me suggestions for where to eat harakomeshi.
The woman who runs the inn is a sweetheart! I arrived in the traditional tatami-mat and futon room which was a great experience already and there were a yukata, chocolates and a thermos of hot water and green tea packets awaiting me (which were refilled everyday, as they cleaned the room!)
The location was excellent - very close to Aomori station and the Nebuta Museum! The staff was also very helpful when explaining things to me. As well, the room had a very Japanese style, and the yukata provided was very cute! Finally, the futon bed on the tatami was much softer than other futons that I have slept on during my trips in Japan, so I was pleasantly surprised.
Yoshidaya Ryokan is a beautifully presented traditional ryokan. Its right in the middle of the old part of Zao Onsen surrounded by historic buildings. This is a traditional Ryokan so be prepared to walk up stairs and use shared facilities. The rooms are very warm and comfortable and the Ryokan facilities are well presented and clean. The Hot Spring bath was wonderful! I will be staying at Yoshidaya again!
