Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Hosts Akira and Yumi were extremely hospitable and helpful, assisting with pick-ups and drop-offs to and from station and snow monkey park. The dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious and the room was very comfortable. Would highly recommend to anyone wishing to stay in the area who wants a traditional ryokan experience!

PhilippinesNot much of a big deal since there is a nearby bus stop, but it could be much better if the place was closer to yudanaka Station. but overall a wonderful experience nevertheless!
Akahira, the host, was the warmest and most thoughtful host we've met. the hotel has been with his family for 3 generations and it's amazing how the entire place is well maintained, unique from modern hotels, and genuine. We enjoyed the facilities, specially the onsen, and the traditional Japanese night wear. Highly recommend this place!

United KingdomNothing!
Akira and Yumi were wonderful welcoming hosts. The ryokan was clean, cozy and spacious and our breakfasts were absolutely delicious. It's also in a beautiful and quiet part of the town with the monkey park within walking distance if you are happy to take a slow hour's walk up up to the hot springs. The onsen facilities were also great to relax in after a day out in the park! We felt very welcome from the moment we arrived, and were very kindly offered a lift back to the train station at check-out with all our luggage. I would highly recommend spending a night or two here!

New ZealandNothing! I had an excellent experience and I highly recommend if you want a quiet and meaningful experience of Japan. Well worth the travel to Yudanaka!
This traditional ryokan is incredible and Akira-san and his mother, Yumi-san made our experience unforgettable. They were both very welcoming and thoughtful. Akira-san's English is very good and he also taught us how to speak Japanese language and culture. Yumi-san didn't speak English but still made us feel welcome. She taught us how to tie our Yukata and cut us fresh persimmon and apples as a parting gift. The private onsens at the Ryokan are clean and relaxing. They also provide the local public Onsen key (which aren't as nice as the ryokan private onsen). The room is super spacious with traditional tatami mats and a gorgeous view of the waterfall and town.

New ZealandNot a lot of nearby restaurant options at night so stick up at the Lawsons in advance.
The owners are fantastic and really attentive. Dropped us off at the monkey park in the morning and then picked us up with our luggage to be transported back to the train station. Receptive also to our email questions in advance either prompt answers. Unique authentic ryokan experience with an awesome Onsen.

AustraliaNothing, we just wished we would have stayed longer.
This ryokan is ideally situated, close to the station, a few steps away from the picturesque streets boarded with public onsens, temples and small local shops. This is exactly what you would expect for a perfect japanese experience. The room was very spacious, clean and well equipped, with a traditional style, and the access to a private onsen is great when is cold outside or just to relax at the end of the day (or having a nice early morning start).

FinlandNothing, it was one of the best places we stayed in on our trip in Japan.
Akira and Yumi were exceptional hosts, super friendly and polite. The ryokan was even more beautiful than in the pictures. The private onsen was wonderful and we were able to go there whenever we wanted. The breakfast and dinner were delicious. Akira and Yumi were also able to cater for my multiple allergies which amazed me. Our room had a beautiful view overlooking the river. The sound of the white water was relaxing.

BelgiumThe location of the accomodation in the small and quiet town of Yamanouchi was so enjoyable. I also LOVED my room. Everything needed was provided and well decorated. You even have a space with table and chairs in addition to low typical japanese style table and cushions, and a sink and fridge. There are two onsens in the basement and you get a kimono to spend your time. Staff is super friendly ! Don't be surprised to get to shower next to the onsen since there are no showers in the rooms! ;)

CanadaOur stay here was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Located just outside beautiful mountain ranges and the delightful Jigokudani Monkey Park, it was the perfect place to relax after spending a day in the mountains. The rooms were clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated in a traditional Japanese style. The ryoken itself felt warm, peaceful, and cozy, with two private onsens, a small zen garden, and some cultural items for display. A note that the bathroom is shared; however, this is really not bothersome as all rooms are located just steps away, and there is a sink in every room. We were constantly impressed by the clear attention to detail, including hot green tea and traditional Japanese sweets already prepared for us in our room. This made for a truly elevated experience. We also thoroughly enjoyed the traditional breakfast presented on beautiful servingware, and would recommend having at least one meal during your stay. We are grateful to Akira and Yumi for their wonderful hospitality and would absolutely stay here again.

SpainThe hospitality was great, the location is stunning and the ryokan itself is very comfortable and makes you feel at home. We had dinner and breakfast and they were able to accommodate one of us being vegan with both meals being delicious. The onsens are very quiet and very well maintained, and can be used for free by the ryokan's guests. Akira-san also offered to take us to both the snow monkeys resort and the station, which was great.
