Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaAkira and Yumi were excellent hosts. The breakfasts were a beautiful Japanese feast. Akira helpfully drove us to the monkey park and the train station. Photos don’t quite capture how lovely the private onsen is (and discrete tattoos were accepted). The location was in amongst other onsens and restaurants. A lovely stay for a family holiday with pre-teens.

United StatesCons: no shower other than the small hoses attached by the onsen. So you have to first reserve the onsen then use the hose to shower even fi you are not interested in the using the onsen. But none in the restroom. I wish there was the option to obtain meals through the stay or pay for them. Really not many restauarants open. I had a difficult time finding food within walking distance. Just kept going to a sushi shop nearby (kyozosushi) which btw is a great sushi shop with a sweet owner.
The rooms are wondefully set. Pristine, clean, tea provided. The family is the best part. They are so so sweet! They provide a ride to snow monkey park and to and from the train station. I unfortunately came at a time when most of the main area was closed. It seems it opens in october. Gave small little watermelons and apricot jam throughout. Everywhere i went, locals ask where i was staying & people knew the hosts here and indicated they are wonderful. It was such a pleasure being here. It is a peaceful oasis. There is a really lovely onsen on site that needs to be reserved. One large one small. Loved it.

FranceWonderful property in Yudanaka with incredibly kind staff: by letting them know in advance our travel plan, they picked us up at the train station upon our arrival, they drove us at the snow monkey park and they came with our luggages to drive us to the train station they day of our departure. Very comfortable room and extremely good breakfast. The hotel is located close to Shibu Onsen, but still in Yudanaka so no access to the Shibu Onsen baths. Two small onsens available in the property, one of which can be booked.

Beautiful and well equipped Ryokan with very spacious rooms. Superb breakfast prepared by Yumi which includes unique flavors and local ingredients. There are two on-site Onsen that can be used anytime and you can access 2-3 other public onsen. Akira San is very generous and helpful and even offered to drop us to the station. Shared toilet but this was spotlessly clean and always available.

BelgiumThe owners are very attentive and they picked us up from the train station. They also brought us to the monkey park. The breakfast is delicious and very typical from Japan. It is very well situated and the Onsen is perfect to relax for the end of the day. We highly recommend if you are looking for a true Japanese experience.

SingaporeNo complaints at all :)
I stayed here for 2 nights, having previously stayed at shibu onsen for 1 night (note that this property is slightly outside the shibu onsen area). This was by far my favourite. The private onsen in the property is divine. It was my favourite onsen during all of my travels around Japan (I tried many private and public onsens). The hosts were so lovely, always smiling and friendly, very helpful and provided me with maps and many recommendations for restaurants in the town. The town is very sweet, the people are lovely. The snow monkey park is walking distance on a fine day, but there are also buses and the hosts will even offer to drive you there. I will visit again and am looking forward to returning to this accommodation to stay here again :)

United StatesOur only regret was that we didn't stay longer!
I couldn't recommend Yudanaka Onsen Yamazakiya more! My husband and I stayed for one night after visiting Snow Monkey Park in the afternoon. We were absolutely blown away by Akira and Yumi's hospitality. The traditional Japanese room was very spacious and comfortable with a beautiful view of the surrounding area. We loved enjoying the private onsen on the property (we used it twice!) and the shared areas were very clean and well-maintained. I was worried about the shared bathroom, but it was very comfortable and there was a sink in the room for easy hand washing. The traditional breakfast the next morning was so delicious and such great value. Akira and Yumi are so incredibly kind and helped us book a reservation at a local restaurant in town for dinner. Akira also offered to drive us to the train station in the morning so that we didn't have to walk. The ryokan is in such a great location – walking distance from local restaurants and about a 30 minute walk from Snow Monkey Park. We've already told our friends (and my brother who lives in Yokosuka) that they need to make the trip to Shibu Onsen and stay at Yudanaka Onsen Yamazakiya. Highly recommend! :)

United KingdomWe loved everything!
Hosts Akira & Yumi were both incredibly helpful and very sweet! We had access to a pick-up service from Yudanaka train station and also to the entrance to the monkey park. We had a delicious breakfast both mornings of our stay! The hotel was a beautiful traditional onsen with views over the town and mountains. The room was clean and very comfortable! One of the best aspects is the two private onsen bath which can be booked throughout your stay - perfect for a travelling couple who want to experience together. Thank you to both Akira & Yumi for our stay!

SloveniaEverything was perfect. Just keep in mind - it is a traditional Japanese accommodation, thus the bed is a futon (nothing wrong, just different from western setting and "comfort").
The accommodation and onsen (for private use) were superb! The owners were very friendly and offered to drive me from/to the Yudanaka train station as well as to/from the Monkey Forest free of charge. The street the onsen is on was very beautiful, close to other onsens (if needed), restaurants and bars, but at the same time, very quiet. I recommend this place very much!

ThailandIf you are looking for a cozy, authentic Japanese style, clean and comfortable mattrass, a dedicated sens of service from the owner Akira who will give you the places to go to eat the best sushi in town etc,.., you found the place at Yamazakiya Ryokan! The "Onsen" was gorgeous too and what a so romantic time going around those 300 years built streets of Yamanouchi, wearing the typical kimono and shoes after the hot bath in the Ryokan! It was definitely my favorite spot in a road trip around Tokyo so far! thank you so much for your kindness and professionalism Mr Akira, and your lovely family; your daughter for sure will become a virtuose at piano 🙂 . Definitely The place to be!
