If I have one complaint, our beds felt like they were made of foam not spring and the sheet was polyester fitted. Considering the price, I think it should be a regular cotton sheet.

Nothing! It was all amazing.

The spaces are gorgeous with the most hospitable staff. All the Onsen facilities were top class especially the outdoor one. We didn't feel like going to any other onsens in town after being in our hotel. Our breakfast and dinner was exemplary with our vegetarian needs taken into account beautifully by the host and chef. We are very grateful for the effort.

We had the room with the private bath. This was the highlight for us. Comfortable beds. Delicious in room drinks were provided. The included dinner and breakfast were incredible! We were very full. Lovely toiletries in the bathroom. Overall was a brilliant stay. The family asked to stay for 1 more day but alas our itinerary meant we had to move on.

Accessing the location with lots of bags can be rather difficult if you’re not able to catch the bus that runs between the various Onsens.

Beautifully well kept property perfectly located between the Onsens and various landmarks. Easy to access by bus from the train station. Public indoor and outdoor Onsens in the Ryokan were wonderfully clean and quiet. The staff were extremely kind and helpful. I would go again in a heartbeat!

The public baths were amazing and the private onsen we booked twice was well worth it! Staff were great. The hyperbaric chamber was a fun surprise to do, didn’t cost much!

This was our only stay in a traditional Ryokan for our Japan trip and it was a very good experience of this sort. We (parents) enjoyed the Onsen and the evening meal. The town is beautiful and well worth a visit. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Beautiful boutique-feeling ryokan with really wonderful staff. We celebrated two birthdays and I was able to coordinate the delicious cakes over email. They even helped us take a photo and printed it out so we all had a little souvenir <3 So thoughtful! The rooms and building were lovely, as was the outdoor onsen. We did the private onsen experience too which was a little extra, but worth it especially to spend time with a partner. Food was tasty and yukatas were very pretty. Felt like a little dream.

It’s a public bathroom (shower facilities) which I wouldn’t expect for the price, but it’s understandable due to edo period. The room has a private toilet though!

My only complaint was that our room made a decent amount of noise. It sounded like a hammering noise in the pipes. We stayed in the room with our own private onsen and maybe this is where the noise was coming from. Otherwise, there was nothing else not to like at the property!

Wonderful location, easy access to transportation, the staff were very accommodating, we had a private dining room dedicated to us during our stay with a very generous amount of food and the room was beautiful.

Nothing -- everything was exceptional!

Everything about Sakaeya was wonderful: we were greeted by friendly staff and had tea while they checked us in. (By the way, it was about a 2 minute walk from the Shibu Onsen bus stop, so very convenient to get to.) Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Our dinner and breakfast were amazing, delicious, and filling, and we enjoyed exceptional service. I cannot think of anything negative to say about our stay here -- we would gladly come again!!
