The traditional meals for dinner and breakfast were amazing even our very fussy 8 year old tried the dishes and found some new tastes. Brillant experience, it worked so well, we were picked up from the train station, had an amazing dinner and then the rooftop bath. Another amazing meal for breakfast and then dropped off at the Monkey Park where we got to see the monkeys. Then picked up and dropped at the station it worked so well. Staff were fabulous. Some lovely memories made thank you!

Nothing, everything was excellent.

Breakfast and dinner were fantastic. Our room was huge- it had 2 king single beds, the tatami mat and the gorgeous traditional low table and chairs. Would have loved to stay longer!

This is not really a better thing but a preference. Not use to futon sleeping we required two mattresses. However ample mattresses and pillows were available so we could adjust to our comfort so we were accommodated.

Staying in a ryokan for the first time was an amazing experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and the accommodation. The location was ideal for what we wanted to do. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast to go was also prepared for us with our last day early morning departure. The host also went out of her way to check in with us, which was a nice touch. We viewed a short video on ryokans before we arrived however this may be something to think about showing 'westerners ' here before they go to their room so they are more familiar with the etiquette that is required. We found knowing a little bit about what was expected helped us to have a more fulfilling experience.

The staff were very helpful, particularly one receptionist. We forgot significant amount of cash in our previous hotel (japanese speaking only), where we could not return due to the lack of trains and our tight schedule (we stayed one night and went to Tokyo). She called both hotels and arranged postal delivery from one to another (it all worked out in the end). Also we thought walking to the monkey park in the morning, so we didn't even check the shuttle schedule and missed it. The same receptionist caught us when we headed out and arranged an extra shuttle to the monkey park: it would be quite long uphill walk otherwise (walking back is nice though, can recommend). We are very grateful for her help!

The only shower for the room is also on the balcony to be used before getting in the Onsen. When we stayed, it was a cold morning to have a balcony shower for all of Yudanaka to see! (there was some railing that helped with preserving my modesty). If you like privacy, that shower may not be for you. However it was so high up and far away, I doubt anyone would see.

After checking in, we were served some hot tea and then taken by shuttle bus to see the snow monkeys. The staff were all exceptional. Once back, we were personally shown to our room and our bags had already been delivered to the room. The room was fantastic with a beautiful view. We splurged and got the VIP room with the balcony Onsen. There were plenty of complimentary drinks, comfortable electronic recliners and some welcome manju. The onsen on the balcony was fantastic and it was really nice to sit in and watch the snow over Yudanaka.

No choice of western breakfast. You only get dinner, if you order it 1 day before… No hot water pressure in the bathroom.

Snow Monkey Park is 15mins by car and you should walk about 30 mins. Private onsen of the hotel is fantastic.

On site parking was slightly expensive (expected as this is a hotel). Best to park round the corner in the public parking area for much bettter rates.

We couldn’t stay longer (our fault)! There is nothing we didn’t like - it was exceptional.

A beautiful classic ryokan with incredible sustainability and services! The staff were the best we had seen in all of Japan, and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. They also were happy to hold onto my snowboard bag for about a week before our booking (shipped from the airport to the hotel).

Very appreciative that they offered shuttle services but it seemed little rushed. We leave the ryokan by 830am and the next pickup is at 1020am. It takes about 25-30 minutes to walk up to the park and then another 25-30 minutes back down to the pickup area. Yudanaka is a small town so not much to do (in our opinion). If you want a difference experience from busy city life, you will definitely get it. We stayed for 2 nights and thought that was more than enough. We were mainly there to see snow monkeys. If you want to save money and don’t care for traditional Japanese ryokan experience, you can do a day trip instead. You can always stay in Nagano station and take a train to Yudanaka for the snow monkey park (I think it was only an hour from Nagano station).

It’s definitely an experience to stay at a traditional ryokan! The room was spacious. Facility in general seemed a little dated but maybe that was supposed to give it some character? It’s nice that they have shuttle services to Snow Monkey park. We payed for breakfast and dinner - overall the food was delicious, some food items my non-Japanese partner did not like. The food is traditional and highlighting the fish dish.

The food at this wonderful ryokan was amazing. The included dinner was delicious and so much food that even as you felt full more plates arrived. I had the western breakfast which was different each day and excellent.
