Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaThere was nothing that that bothered me enough to say anything.
The breakfast (and dinner) was wonderful. The traditional japanese meal was a first experience for me. The baths were also amazing, the outdoor one especially! The owner and staff were incredibly nice, helpful, and welcoming! Location is great for seeing the snow monkey park.

Hong KongThe only real negative I would say is the lack of a warm shower, it might have just been a problem at the time but it is literally the only complaint.
We had a wonderful stay at Onyado Hishiya Torazo. We did a one night stopover on the way back from Kanazawa to Tokyo. I would probably stay two nights if I was to do it again. I think the highlights for us were the exceptional food, warm and friendly staff and the lovely outside onsen. I think the weather also really helped create the atmosphere as we arrived in a flurry of snow which lasted all night. We unfortunately did not make the most of the other public onsen in the town which I would do if we had more time but the onsen within the ryokan was great for us. The owner greeted us when we arrived and a welcome message with our names was on the counter. He was very helpful with giving us recommendations in the local area and let us know how to get to the snow monkey park in the morning, a 1 minute walk to the bus stop. The ryokan itself is very old which really adds character. Both the dinner and breakfast were exceptional. A lovely selection of local dishes and some very tasty beef. The lady who prepared our meal was really welcoming and friendly. It was our first onsen experience. You leave the main building and walk a few steps through the pretty small garden to the entrance of the outside onsen. You could change a board over to let people know it was in use which was nice. It has been beautifully made and the lighting only added to the atmosphere. It certainly helped that a fresh layer of snow surrounded the onsen. The temperature was colder than the indoor baths, but for me, the outside one was perfect and I could have stayed there all night. It was our first ryokan and onsen experience that we wont forget.

United KingdomLoved every moment and wished we had stayed here and in the area longer, because it seemed so much effort was put in to our visit one day was a shameful Waste of their hard work!!
Every single thing was a remarkable life experience for our family. The bus stop from the local train station is a couple minutes walk to the property, just make sure to check your timetables (the buses are prompt!) so they align or try to reserve a taxi. We walked from the station up the hill as we missed it all and decided to walk to get to the jikokudani Onsen in time on that day - and didn’t mind in the slightest but this will be very hard for most. We arrived early and found the ryokan easily as it is right next to Onsen 9!!(which was awesome). They told us in advance that they were happy to store our luggage while we went out. Our names were written on a welcome sign and as we wanted to go see the Jikokudani Onsen before it closed we left our luggage next to the desk and hoped no offence taken. We arrived after a wonderful hike to see the monkeys to find our luggage in rooms and our host at the desk waiting to escort us to the room. He gave us a walk through of how to use the gorgeous traditional robes around the property and town, and what time dinner and breakfast would be. We also received the key to all 9 public baths in the town! The Japanese style room was spacious for our family and comfortable, extremely clean and with a welcome of traditional sweets and green tea. We went to a kaiseki dinner in a private room which was phenomenal. The hosts also very kindly accommodated our food requests and we are grateful for their effort. After dinner we went out on an onsen tour as a family which was incredible and and easy stroll through the beautiful town at night since they are open till 10pm. The private onsens at the ryokan are truly fabulous and open 24 hours, and the outdoor one could be reserved as a family by simply popping the reserved sign at the entrance ! We loved this ! 13 generations have managed this beautifully kept ryokan - and each have left their mark in the beautiful art and hobbies displayed.

the best hotel experience I have ever stay in Japan. so unique, full of traditional charm. the staff is super helpful, they let us keep our baggage after check out. I always want to try outdoor onsen but don't have the gut to do it with stranger, the best part is they have private outdoor onsen and its free! (the hotel should put it in the description, definitely a plus, its a nice surprise!). staying here not only comfortable but a whole experience. I can use any kimono, sandals, and bags available in the hotel and we use it to walk around the hotel.

United StatesThe only downside was my tactical error made while trying to fit everything into only 15 days in Japan - we only booked one night! Two should be the minimum and when I return it’ll probably be for three.
This is the ultimate in vacation hospitality. The room was very comfortable and larger than I expected (we were a couple and our adult child in the three futon room). The onsen were amazing! By the way, my daughter has a tattoo on her torso so I asked about that and was told it would be no issue at all. Sitting in the room in a yukata sipping green tea after a long soak in a very warm onsen was probably the most relaxed I’ve ever been! And I’m a pretty relaxed guy. The whole experience of traditional dress, meal, accommodation, and the onsen was an absolute highlight of our vacation. And unfortunately I don’t remember his name, but the man running the inn deserves a special shoutout. Seriously one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Don’t miss this gem of a vacation experience!

ChinaNothing to note.
Very authentic and centrally located hotel in an old family house comprised of two buildings. The owner was very polite and helpful, answering any question we had. Japanese breakfast was impressive and best of all was the outdoor onsen inside the property. Better than any other public onsen in town. The building is oldish but in good condition and clean. In winter temperature inside the house was a bit low but the thick futon beds and blankets were good. Not a luxury stay but very recommendable for a great experience.

So so so beautiful!! The building itself was absolutely gorgeous, clearly authentic traditional style, peaceful homely atmosphere. The room was amazing, so spacious, tasteful, bright and cozy. The staff were warm and helpful at all times and we got a great tour of the facilities at check in. Yukatas and a key to the onsens were provided in addition to the beautiful private baths on the property. The food was delicious, as were the tea and snacks in the room. 10/10 I can’t recommend this place high enough!!

United StatesThe food was just ok but it’s an experience we appreciated. I don’t know if I am too old for the futon or maybe I didn’t use it right. I had a hard time sleeping that night. The toilet in our room smells so that’s room for improvement. Other than that we enjoyed our stay.
The outdoor onsen is beautiful. This is the highlight of this ryokan for us. We were welcomed warmly by the owner. He gave my son a dragon origami which he is saving in his travel journal for memory. It’s a cute little place we recommend.
