Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaOnly small issue I had was that I was planning on doing some laundry at the guesthouse, but every day that I was there the clothes line and/or washing machine was already in use. The place was pretty much fully booked out so it’s not surprising, just a little inconvenient for me! There’s a laundromat literally right around the corner though, it was great but kind of expensive.
Had a great time in Kyoto staying here. The guesthouse is clean and comfortable, with a great kitchen and shared space with free tea and coffee. It’s also a great place to meet other travellers. It’s a 15 minute walk from Kyoto station, and not that close to main tourist spots, but it’s fine if you’re happy to walk a little and there’s lots of bike hire options nearby.

Nice guesthouse, nice shared space, bedrooms were quite comfortable as well. One service person helped me to call my next hotel, which was really nice of here.

EgyptThe staff are super friendly and accommodating. They keep the place spotless, cleaning and maintaining it throughout the day. There are a few bus stops near the house, the nearest one is a minute away. The place is so cozy and well decorated.

IndiaNothing that I can think of except for the check in time to be changed to 10 AM or 11AM.
Everything about this stay is very beautiful aesthetically decorated and has an artistic touch. It is in a walking distance to Kyoto station that saves you a lot of time in commute and getting started with your day immediately for sightseeing. There are other facilities also in walking distance to the property so makes it a perfect value for money and comfortable stay for solo travelers

PolandI liked the style of a Japanese house kind of vibe. It's close to the station (only three stops). And there's a wide selection of board games. The rooms were like in dorms.

DenmarkI liked everything. I have no complaints :) I will come back if i ever visit Kyoto again.
I liked everything. I have been staying here once in 2019, and it was still as cozy as i remembered. The location is close to the train station, and the common room is super nice and cosy. The bunk beds are big and has privacy curtains, which i loved. I stayed during New Years and the host had arranged New Years dinner for the guests. I did not join but i though that was very kind and a nice offer for all of us travelling during the holidays.

ItalyThe only problem was that the shower and the sinks were connected by the little garden outside so I got a cold the first shower I had there ahah but nothing that can't be managed!
The hostel is extremely traditional without being a ryokan! The common spaces are incredibly beautiful and everything is at your service, with a very kind staff, always available for you!

JapanIt can be a bit noisy at night if you sleep close to the common area because people can stay there and speak the whole night. The showers are also shared, so that's not ideal during busy times.
The staff was very friendly and the common area was nice, where you could prepare some simple meals (no stove) and enjoy some board games and kotatsu. The place has a retro vibe and it's great if you want to socialize.

New ZealandWhen we booked this hotel we were looking forward staying in a traditional style japanese house. The bokuyado surpassed our expectations, with a beautiful garden out the back and a well made old Japanese house. And without even knowing before we arrived the owner is a board game fanatic, who has undress of board games for his guests to play, and even joined us for a game one night.

AustraliaVery cosy, homey vibe. Dorm room and common areas were clean and the wifi was good. I loved the board games collection and kotatsu in the Japanese-style common room, perfect for winter! The garden was very cute and the staff were also lovely. It was about a 10 min walk from Kyoto station, but close to convenience stores. Would definitely stay again.

PhilippinesIt was unexpectedly an amazing opportunity to meet people from across the globe, not to mention, the crazy amount of board games to play with! The staff were also extra friendly and supportive. I came there around New Year’s and the staff prepared a New Year’s Eve dinner for all of us staying that time. It was such a memorable and sweet time at this guesthouse! I would definitely consider this a home away from home whenever I’m in Kyoto 🫶🏻 Room wise, it’s still a very comfortable resting place for any traveler!

United StatesStaff were super nice and gave us fantastic local recommendations. We did't realize when we booked but staff all spoke Mandarin and Japanese which was very helpful for my friends and I as we don't speak Japanese. Rooms were very comfortable and there was a lovely kitchen+ area with kotatsu tables.

AustraliaThe walk from Kyoto or Gojo station at night didn't feel great, especially for a solo female traveller. There were no big attractions nearby, so getting to and from the station every day was a must, but got old fast. While the smoking area was outside (in the interior garden) it was also right beside the toilets and sinks, which were also outside (and probably freezing in winter). This made it hard to avoid smoke on occasion. The female only dorm was bunk beds, which was unusual for Japan (usually they have capsules, which have much better privacy and no squeaky beds!)
This hostel was based inside a traditional house, with tatami downstairs in the common area. It had a lot of character - with hundreds of board games and card games! Very cute interior garden. The staff were very nice and helpful. I wasn't told the hostel was cash-only (maybe I'm mistaken, and it's in the accomodation information) but the staff were very relaxed and told me to pay whenever I could. Very much appreciated!

United KingdomThe only issue is the noise - we stayed close to the entry way and the walls in the building are thin so could very easily hear our neighbouring guests even when they spoke quietly. The reception provide earplugs for this which helped a little. Would recommend bringing an eyemask if you need darkness to sleep as different small windows and panels in the room allow light in from outside.
Lovely welcoming guesthouse with a warm and friendly atmosphere. We really liked staying in a more traditional style setting in Kyoto. A large common room with tatami flooring provided a nice quiet spot to hang out with a HUGE array of boardgames (although only a handful in English). Our room was fine, with a good amount of space for us to manage two large suitcases. Common bathrooms/toilets were also kept clean and were user-friendly. It was also very walkable to Kyoto station (about 20 mins, flat, with luggage). The main attractions were within 30-45 minutes' walk.
