One of the best accomodations my friends and I have ever stayed at. The lodge is beautiful, and owners so kind and accomodating. Additionally, the breakfast was exceptional, something different and very creative for each day we were there (again don't think I have ever stayed somewhere that does a breakfast this good). I usually never write reviews, but this place was so beyond exceptional I have to. I can't put in to words how much I loved and would recommend this it - 10000/10. Thankyou for having us!

Eric was the most amazing host. The value you get here is incredible- ground transportation, restaurant concierge, delicious free breakfast, travel tips, help booking trains, weather based recommendations on where to ski, etc. five star treatment at bargain bin price!

WOW WOW WOW…I cannot explain in words how wonderful this lodge is, but I will try nevertheless Communication: From the time that we made the booking until we left the lodge the communication was exceptional. Eric sent us details on the best way to travel from the airport to the lodge, gave us a list of recommended restaurants and offered to make the bookings on our behalf. We arrived at the lodge at 2h30 am and Eric was there to welcome us. We had a what’s-up group chat with Eric wherein we let him know when we wanted to be collected from ski fields and restaurants. Food: We are spoiled with an amazing, cooked breakfast every morning. The breakfast was different each morning for the week that we were there. We also had 24/7 access to tea/coffee/hot chocolate and snacks. Transport: We did not have a car and were taken to and from the ski fields & restaurants for dinner each day. We were also taken to a supermarket to stock up on supplies for the week when we arrived. The lodge and our room: The lodge is beautiful and immaculately clean. Our room was beautiful with our own bathroom, comfortable bed, with a small fridge and coach. The lodge has a large drying room for snowboarding and skis. Fireplace: The lodge has an amazing open fire in the lounge where we spend many evenings just chilling out after a big day on the slopes. The lodge is dog-friendly and several guests brought their dogs with them. Thank you for a wonderful 5-star holiday 😊

The whole experience exceeded our expectations, from the large and comfortable room to the cozy shared area, where we could relax and enjoy the fireplace. The breakfast was delicious, everyday we tried something different. And last but not least, the great customer service provided by Eric. Always available and helpful to provide information about the area. Would definitely come back.

Book NOW and thank me later if you’re looking for the perfect place in Hakuba :) we are a group of 6 traveling to Hakuba for snowboarding. I hesitated at first because this lodge looked far from center based on the map. Little did I know Eric, the host, provided personalized shuttle service anywhere within Hakuba for free from early morning to late at night to ski resorts, dinner and more. Our friend stayed at ski in/ski out in Happo and regretted his decision. Eric made sure we were fed, had our reservations for dinner because we are a big group, bought our train tickets to Kyoto, and ship our luggages on time. We’ve traveled to many countries, stayed at airbnbs to 5 star hotels and nothing measured up to our experience at this lodge. We felt we underpaid him for the extremely spacious, clean and beautiful rooms and the services he provided. One of the highlights of our trip.

I cannot say enough good things about Eric and Fume! This is absolutely the best experience I could have imagined for my first trip to Hakuba. From the rooms to the breakfast service to the local knowledges and recommendations by Eric and Fume, every detail was perfect. Also shout out to Myles for his excellent service and of course the lovely Hime, the sweetest house dog. Everything about Backcountry Lodge makes you feel at home. I can’t wait to come back

No dislikes whatsoever!

This has been our favourite stay and highlight of Japan so far. If you are looking for accomodation in Hakuba that is dog friendly, has amazing breakfasts (courtesy of Fumie), comfortable and spacious rooms, relaxing common spaces and so close to some of the most amazing ski resorts… look no further as you have found it. Eric has been absolutely amazing with advice on local restaurants, pick ups and drop offs and even just for a laugh. Also a special thanks to Miles too for assisting with shuttle services and some great conversations! You have all made our stay in Hakuba so memorable. When (not if) we return to Hakuba in the future, we will definitely be staying at Backcountry Lodge again! Thank you so much :)

Eric, Fumie and all of the staff were so accommodating and helpful! Being able to be picked up and dropped off anywhere around Hakuba was amazing, plus the breakfasts every morning were exceptional. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and of course it was always a treat to see Hime around the lodge!

Only one downfall the location is a fair way from any shops to walk to. However the shuttle service provided is excellent.

The room large, breakfast was fantastic, something different every day. Hosts Eric and Fumi are extremely hospitable, and will drive you to and from the ski resorts and restaurants.

Nothing, it was all very good.

Too much to list, but the real difference here was the personal touch you receive from the owners that you can't get in a "hotel" and the location (in the middle of the Hakuba valley with great access to al the areas). Breakfast was superb with a change each morning to the cooked dish. Eric, Fumi and Satami really made our stay feel like home; glad we decided to stay an extra 2 nights. Their help and advice made the remaining three weeks of our trip so much more enjoyable and looking back it was the best accommodation we had. Eric's local knowledge and recommendations where to eat and ski was 1st class as was the advice for first time public onsen users.
