Lumley Castle Hotel, hotel in Chester-le-Street

Within easy driving distance of Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland, the magnificent spectacle of Lumley Castle has dominated the County Durham landscape for over 630 years.

Castle looks stunning as you approach and it is located well from the motorway. One of the waitresses for breakfast was very helpful and could not do enough for you and very happy in her job. She was a young girl with a nose piercing and I didn't get her name, but probably the only member of staff we felt should be working there.

Liked the price. The kitchen had enough dishes for a family of five. Clean bedding. And overall pretty clean accommodation. Pillows not too hard and big enough. It was comfortable to sleep.

I went to school in Chester le Street many years ago so I know the area very well, I now live in Scotland so a visit, although just overnight was excellent. It’s a very historical area with the cathedral and castle in Durham just above the river Wear and has very much ‘Oldie World Charm’. The cathedral has St Cuthbert’s bones laid to rest there and there’s so much more history in the area including two more castles at Chester le Street, Lumley and Lambton ( where the famous ‘Lambton Worm’ song comes from.) It was a very short, sweet visit but the hotel was excellent.

So much to love and enjoy at Lumley.

So much to love and enjoy at Lumley. The historic location and building are exceptional. The beautiful grounds and planting greet you first, there must be a team of skilled gardeners maintaining it. Inside the castle it's snug and welcoming and the music is gentle, relaxing and unobtrusive. The food was fabulous. I had a lamb dish followed by sticky toffee pudding, I highly recommend both. I noticed the interesting vegetarian alternatives on the menu. Breakfast was a delight, a buffet with cold meats, cheeses, breads, fruit salads, yogurts, breads, etc. And of course a good choice of cooked breakfasts. We had the full English breakfast, very tasty, next time I'm going to try the Craster Kippers. Our room was lovely, we stayed in a superior Courtyard Room. The bed was huge and extremely comfortable. The shower was powerful and easy to operate. All the staff were friendly and so willing to help. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. We spent time sitting in the Library Bar or outside in the secret garden. It was a very relaxing stay and we felt very well looked after. To top it all, in the morning when we were checking out Lady Poppet Lumley took time to chat with us, in all her feline loveliness. Thank you everyone at Lumley for a wonderful stay.

Lots of history,if you choose to look for it .

Lots of history,if you choose to look for it . Laid back ,with nice friendly Geordies only to happy to help you, with advice and directions . Do not forget to take home a tub of pease pudding and a stotti cake ( flat bread cake ) . Stotti ,ham and a thick layer of pease pud ,is addictive. Also sample the local corned beef lattice pie ,with a touch of brown sauce , very tasty. Go and have a coffee or a breakfast,at Lumley castle , you won't regret it . A lovely, centuries old , place ,full of character, with lovely staff.

Chester-Le-Street has had a poor reputation for along time but that is the past and the new Chester-Le-Street is improving significantly. Worth a visit and definitely if you get a chance to stay overnight at Lumley Castle. Real value for money and food is exceptional. Highly recommended just for the breakfast and dinner.

Very good value for money, breakfast included.

Very good value for money, breakfast included. Room was clean and the bed comfortable. Only irritating issue was the bed, which had a large frame! Resulting in bang on the knee or, if avoiding it, a bang on the head from the tv :-)

Lumley Castle is a hotel in a lovely setting and just a little bit unusual. The room in the castle was spacious and comfortable, the location itself is quiet but still convenient to get to Durham, Newcastle, etc. Breakfast was great - good selection on the buffet and a nice cooked breakfast. There is plenty of parking and a nice walk down by the river.

Recommended accommodation! We stayed here for our visit to the Beamish museum, that was easily reachable from the hotel. The room was cozy and silent, notwithstanding the road close by. We really enjoyed the restaurant's food, at both breakfast and dinner.

We had no opportunity to 'like' anything as we had a car accident on the way to the hotel. We rang to explain.
