Crown and Garter, hotel in Newbury

Situated in the picturesque village of Inkpen, the Crown and Garter is a traditional English pub with stylish rooms, a restaurant and bakery. It opens onto a lovely garden.

Set in an idyllic location in the village of Inkpen. We received a warm welcome and was shown to our room which was nicely decorated, modern and clean. The beer garden was delightful as it was a lovely sunny evening and the box of blankets for when the sun went down was a lovely touch. Dinner was delicious and the service was excellent by all of the staff. A great find and we would always stay here if in the area.

The Furze Bush Inn, hotel in Newbury

Set in Newbury, 7.4 km from Highclere Castle, The Furze Bush Inn offers accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a restaurant and a bar.

A really good find in the lovely Hampshire/Berkshire countryside. I had hoped to visit Highclere but it doesn't open until July so had two lovely days in Winchester and Basingstoke instead. Room clean and bigger than I was expecting as it was a large double. Good food both breakfast and evening meals and nice real ales.

We stayed in the suite and it was fantastic - beautifully decorated, huge king sized bed and a lovely copper bath in the corner of the room. Dinner and breakfast were both great, and the staff were really accommodating at all times. Would definitely recommend. Lots of good walks nearby as well, up towards Donnington Castle.

We stayed in a double room in the Summer House looking out at the lake. A large, clean, very comfortable room and equally large, clean en-suite bathroom. The little alcove with 2 big armchairs was perfect for a glass of wine whilst watching the bird life down by the lake. The full English breakfast was delicious, it really set us up for the whole day. A relaxing place and a great location for which to visit Highclere Castle and Donnington Castle. The staff were friendly and helpful.
