All of the staff we encountered were highly professional and very helpful. Those who stood out were Ian on the door, Emma and Dan in the restaurant. The room was very comfortable and all bathroom fittings worked well.

The location of the hotel is unbeatable, right next to the Minster and York's city walls. The building is impressive, the garden is beautiful, the staff very friendly, breakfast delicious. You are in the middle of an atmospheric oasis. We would also like to mention the pictures, which touched and surprised us with memories of a very special lion and his unique story. Also seeing pictures of George Adamson was amazing.

Clifford's Tower
A key player in the Bolshevik Revolution, this battle bruiser sits conspicuously on the Petrogradskaya Embankment. A well-travelled vessel, it’s now stationary on the banks of the Bolshaya Nevka River, where you can jump aboard and see its machinery and masts up close.

A fabulous castle with considerable history.
A fabulous castle with considerable history. Much of it violent, but very central to York’s history since the twelfth century. Remarkable also that its walls are intact, which enables visitors to see (with a little imagination), what residency within the walls was like.
Considerable information on its past as a residency, prison and battles is provided by way of information plaques and audio presentations, including a very black period for the Jewish population high in 1190.

The tower used to be an empty shell but in 2022 a brand new internal stairway was installed so you now look more closely at it's interior features and there's an excellent viewing area on the roof where you can look out over the city. Audio guides are provided in the form of individual speakers and a smartphone app.

This is a remarkable relic of the distant past when rulers had to build immense fortified buildings to protect their territory. The hilltop site allowed defenders to see who was invading. A moat allowed them to prevent enemies from reaching the castle (because this is really a castle, not a tower). A broad open space allowed defenders to pick off invaders. Inside, life was difficult and austere, as you will see from the absence of charming rooms. Instead, you will see immensely thick walls, small rooms around a grand open center, typical of protective buildings. People had a choice between being alive or being comfortable. Now we can enjoy the interesting audio presentations inside the castle and then go up to the roof for a view of York and its buildings. Notice especially a group of three handsome stone-faced buildings around a courtyard, and views to the cathedral, called the Minster.

The view on the top is very good.
The view on the top is very good. You could see the whole York on the top of the tower. However, the tickets are hard to be considered as valuable as it only bring you to the top platform with no other events!

The houseboat is in a great location not far from everything tourists would like to visit when in York city centre. It is especially close to Clifford’s Tower. It is clean and a great size and contains everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The bedrooms and living room are cosy, the kitchen is well equipped and the bathroom even has a bath! Parking is close by and there is an outdoor area to enjoy the sun. We would love to stay again. We would definitely recommend staying here for an enjoyable and memorable stay in York.
