At the meeting point of the Thames and Kennet rivers, affluent Reading is close to London, yet far enough to feel completely different. For this reason it is an important business hub, particularly for IT. The M4 motorway runs directly from here to Heathrow Airport, and trains from its station terminate at Paddington.
The town has literary connections to Jane Austen – whose school was in the Abbey Gateway – and Oscar Wilde, who was imprisoned in its jail. Nowadays, the Reading Festival is its biggest cultural event and has earned a place in the town hall museum. However, its most impressive exhibit is a replica of the Bayeux Tapestry.
The Reading shopping options include Broad Street and The Oracle, a riverside complex also housing bars, cinemas and restaurants. The river continues south to one of the town’s green spaces, some housing golf courses. Forbury Gardens features a bandstand and large lion statue, and next door are ruins of an abbey founded by Henry I.
Potential day trips include the Roman remains at Silchester, and river cruises to Henley-on-Thames, while sport lovers should visit the Madejski Stadium, home of Reading FC and London Irish rugby club.

Only one night at the hotel and spent very little time in Reading as we went to Twickenham for the day to watch rugby but we thoroughly enjoyed the boat cruise up the Thames from our hotel and would like to take a cruise in the opposite direction ie towards Henley next time we visit

In truth, I didn't visit Reading for the town itself, but to see my daughter who lives in a flat there. We drove around for a short while, so that we could see some shops and eat out somewhere. We had a short stop on a barge to have a nice cup of tea then later ate at The Oracle in a Japaneese restaurant called OSAKA at Unit 16, Riverside Level. OSAKA had a really good vibe as well as good food ;-) I didn't find Reading particularly interesting, as it somehow felt like a jumble of concrete buildings and roads. No doubt it has some hidden treasures, like the barge we found to have tea on - which needed to be booked. It has to be said that I didn't have many hours there at all, therefore, nothing was espeically planned.

In the evening we went to the slug and lettuce for pornstar martinis. There is a cinema and other attractions close by and it was amazing walking down by the river.

The town and the major roads into it are extremely busy. Lots of traffic lights and some complex junctions and lane changing. We did not stop in the town centre because that was not the object of our visit. The golf course looked tempting but that will have to wait for another time.

I am familiar with Reading, but, for those not so familiar, the area can be a little noisy, to be expected, given the central location. Everything is on your doorstep. Shops, clubs, etc. Never lack of anything to do, places to check out, shops, etc. Eateries to suit all tastes and budgets!
This hotel is our go to location on twickenham weekends. It is located across the road from the station. Less than 5 mins walk. If you walk the opposite direction you are in Reading town centre.
The price per room is competitive and the Towels are excellent
If you require food and drinks the bar serves good cocktails and excellent bar food. The restaurant is always fully booked
The location was excellent only a 5 min walk from Reading railway station and right in the centre of Reading so perfect. The staff were friendly, welcoming, helpful, professional. The hotel was calm, quiet and safe. The room was comfortable and clean with tea and coffee making facilities, a table and chair, tv and very comfortable bed. I had a great view from the top.
Incredibly friendly & welcoming reception staff- hotel is located in centre of Reading above a large bar/ restaurant which wouldn't usually be my ideal however I was on second floor at rear & had very peaceful stay- it was Friday night so was bit concerned but no worries there. Tastefully decorated & very well fitted out accommodation, everything I could hope for.
- Value for money..one is looking for cheap/clean hotel.
- Hotel has a large parking space if you are driving
- Staff are good and helpful. I stayed here for more than 10 days and we became friends
- Hotel location is good. Walkable distance from Reading central. 2 minutes from public park
You couldn’t ask for a better location, it’s a one minute walk from the train station. And in the middle of the town centre with a huge amount of shops restaurants and bars.
The breakfast was good with a good variety of different food options.
The hotel staff were all very friendly.
When we arrived at the hotel the sofa bed was not made so we had to go down to reception and ask for bedding. We had to place the bedding on ourselves when we opened the sofa it had dirty sheets and bedding still in the sofa it was absolutely awful
The hotel is fantastic. The facilities are great, and the service is excellent. The location is very convenient. Specifically, it is a short walk from the train station, and walking distance to restaurants, pubs, supermarkets, and banks.
Hotel staff is friendly and supportive. In my room iron and iron stand were not available. Receptionist arranged it promptly. Daytime receptionist guided me for my travel journey to Reading Town Centre and return. My room size was good.
We got a room which was sufficiently quiet to miss the music from downstairs. Room staff were pleasant and helpful. Location is great for attending events in Reading town centre and close to buses, trains and car parking.
I used to stay at this hotel every time when we went to Reading, that was atleast 2 times a year to see my son T Uni. It is close to the centre of the town, so buses etc available to Uni just outside the hotel.
Hotel just 10 mins from Reading station & in the centre of the town so everything was on your doorstep. Lovely old building, great room with good opening windows & a fan. Lovely staff, great value for money.
We thought we had booked the hotel in the centre of Reading so were disappointed that we had the incorrect one. Not the hotels fault but the location was not what we had hoped for. Hotel itself is lovely.
Room on the top floor with washing and toilet on the ground floor. Mattress was thin like a camping mattress. One of our guys refused to stay there and booked another hotel over the road.
The staff at this place are extremely helpful and friendly and made our stay brilliant.
The best customer experience from a hotel I've visited and will certainly be coming back here.
The staff were extremely helpful and made sure our stay was comfortable.
The location is very good, and while on a busy road the hotel is very quiet and in a pleasant setting.
Great location. 15 mins walk from Reading station. Hotel is just beside the Thames River with beautiful swans on the river bank. Very well maintained swimming pool and gym.
