Accidentally booked this Chateau D'Origny near Roanne rather than the one we wanted near Nevers and it was too late to change before we realised the mistake our friends had made when doing a joint booking. We arrived mid-afternoon on a Sunday, just as lunch was finishing. It smelt wonderful. Such a shame then that the restaurant was closed on a Sunday evening, meaning we'd have to venture out by car to somewhere else.
All that being said, the place is charming and unusual. Bought to stock the contents of many years of collecting fine furniture by the Belgian owners, this place oozes charm. The fabulous welcome from all the staff made up for us missing the chance to eat there. As we were nearly 2 hours away from where we needed to be Monday morning, they kindly agreed to serve breakfast an hour early at 7am - and WHAT A SPREAD. Huge quantities of bread, pastries and other snacks which proved too much to eat - so they boxed it up for us to eat for lunch!
There are only 5 bedrooms, but there are huge and beautifully furnished with all kinds of memorabilia. Massive bathroom, with original tomette tiles and deep bath. Comfy seating area and massive bed. Really worth a detour... just not as much as we did! :)

It felt like we were staying in our own country house. Beautiful house and location and we had a large terrace with our room looking out over the surrounding fields. No food provided but we found a nice restaurant a short driving distance away at Lac Villerest. We were staying there to watch the Tour de France nearby but the hotel would also be perfect for a romantic vacation
