A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.
Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.
The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.
The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.
Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

Canberra is a great medium sized city with lots of things to do. It has all of the tourist attractions like Parliament, Museums, Art Galleries etc as well as some beautiful natural attractions and scenic drives only a short distance on the outskirts of the city. It has many great restaurants and shopping centres. There is good public transport.

Canberra is home to national treasures including the War Memorial, Parliament House, National Museum and the National Gallery. The central city area is based on Lake Burley-Griffen and provides very pleasant backdrop to significant monuments and buildings. We noted that since our last visit that night life in the central city area has improved greatly due to more community art displays and dining places.

Canberra has a lot of places of interest to visitors.
Canberra has a lot of places of interest to visitors.
I visited the Australian War Memorial, Museum of Australian Democracy, Portrait Gallery, Australian Archives, and National Gallery.
I used the public bus system to get around. Ensure that you check the bus timetable, as buses do not run very frequently.

Lots of things to see - Museum, art gallery etc, all close to each other. Some things are further afield and worth seeing, so a car is very useful/necessary. I discovered the buses don't take cash and I would have to apply for a travel card 7-10 days in advance to get it in the mail! They don't take credit cards either (apparently that is coming in November 2024, but not much use to me when my friends weren't able to give me a lift as planned!) I can't believe a city that wants visitors makes it IMPOSSIBLE to go anywhere by bus or light train!

Canberra is an easy getaway from Sydney.
Canberra is an easy getaway from Sydney.
Found enough to do for a couple of days and a good variety of restaurants and venues.
Very relax place to just explore and take a break away with some interesting places to see and visit for different reasons.
Also there are plenty of outdoor things to do, did go Mountain biking as the tracks are awesome.
Worth a visit, when you can
Worst hotel experience I have ever had, car number plate got stolen from parking area, had to cancel my remaining trip and drove back to Melbourne without number plate. Staff didn't cooperate to sort out the issue, car park is very dodgy with no proper surveillance.
Moreover, the carpet in room was filthy, room had an odd smell and after the first day I asked housekeeping for thorough cleanliness and some air freshener. It wasn't good experience to stay with family.
Instructions provided made it extremely easy to navigate. As a young family with an infant, we were pleasantly surprised the unit was comfortable for three. Spacious shower area made it easy to fit a portable mini tub for an infant that we brought. Another bonus for us was the flat access allowing baby pram access right to the door. Not all apartments would offer towels, soap/shampoos so this was yet an other nice touch. Quiet. Would stay again when next in Canberra.
We enjoyed our stay at the Mercure. We liked the fact that the hotel was a heritage building. We loved the on-site pub. It was very good value. The hotel was about a 20-minute walk from the city centre. Overall, we would have enjoyed the location and Canberra more if we had rented a car. The tourists sites are very spread out. It would also have been nice to visit some places outside of the city.
Excellent accomodation for a couple of days. An easy drive in to the centre of Canberra to visit attractions. The rooms were spacious and the bathrooms were a good size and spotlessly clean. Beds were comfortable. We had booked last minute as our trip was impacted by weather and floods and we extended our stay an extra night. The staff were extremely helpful.
Room was clean and very big. Bathroom very spacious. Sheets and carpet were very clean. Loved that this hotel had their own rooftop bar and pool. Hotel was very well-located, only a short walk to Lonsdale street which has loads of cafes, shops and restaurants. Free parking on site was a plus!
We will definitely stay again when we visit Canberra.
The hotel is centrally located on Northbourne Avenue, so it depends on what you intend to do when you are in Canberra. This is a basic hotel if you want somewhere to sleep and shower and to eat simply. It is probably suitable for families, and the hotel does have a bar, gym and pool. Our room was quiet, and we heard no traffic noise.
A perfect place with all Facilities which you need during holidays.
Right in the city center, Walking to Canberra Center, where all things are happening till late.
All amenities were perfect and neatly provided - typically all you need for a holiday was there.
Funky little hotel in inner south Canberra. Very nice clean lines in the hotel design, small but comfortable rooms. Designed more for the short stay visitor wanting value for money in a clean and comfortable hotel, rather than the luxury-seeking guest.
The room exceeded our expectations. The Lux decor, modern clever design, very comfortable bed. The bathroom and room is exceptionally spacious. I have already recommended this to friends and family. This is my preferred hotel from now on.
Third stay with the Statesman Hotel. The room was clean and very comfortable for our stay. Towels were changed on the second day. Very reasonable price for a Canberra hotel stay. Cheaper on Booking.com than via the hotel's website?
Great ambiance in the lounge/bar. Clean rooms. Tastefully decorated hotel in general. The free mini bar was an unexpected plus! Very close to the lake and a run/workout. Good breakfast and very friendly staff.
Beautiful and charming hotel. Our room was spacious, clean and had the most comfortable bed we have ever slept on. The service and convenient parking added to our experience. Exceeded our expectations.
We choose to stay in this hotel when staying in Canberra, which can be up to a dozen times per year! We love the cleanliness, location and staff. ARC breakfast is nearby and Canberra CBD a short stroll.
Loved the room outlook, and the friendliness of staff second to none. Red Salt breakfast was amazing each morning, and the hotel central to all Canberra activities.
