Bairnsdale is a large country town. The Catholic Church as you you enter from the Melbourne side on the left is definitely worth a visit. A volunteer is available and has a wealth of information in relation to the church and history of the area. Not to be missed.
There are plenty of shops, the Potted Pear, gift wares, is great.
There are museums, historical and Aboriginal.
Bairnsdale is a lovely place for a day visit.

Typical Australian town which is busy during the day and completely dead at night. Felt quite safe to walk around early evening but can't comment on late evening. All usual shops available.
We ate at the Cow & Fish Pub which was excellent for food but lacked soft furnishings in the dining area. Felt it was a bit like a social club rather than a hotel/restaurant.
Very convenient for us as travelling down to Paynesville and Lakes Entrance which is only a 25 minute drive away. Also played golf at Metung Country Club which was excellent including lunch at the club house.

Our stay was way too short.
Our stay was way too short. Bairnsdale allows you the perfect location to explore the region.
You have to try the Thai restaurant Cinnamon, it was amazing and the flavours are on point.
We ventured to Metung and Lakes Entrance and could have easily done multiple days at both locations.

RSL served us the wrong order steak that was boot leather.
RSL served us the wrong order steak that was boot leather. surrounding cafes served overpriced meals. A lot of foot traffic around left us not leaving doors unlocked. We used it as a destination for the hotel. And that is where it ended. however we only stayed one night.

The Mitchel River Tavern is an interesting place to stay.
The Mitchel River Tavern is an interesting place to stay. Close to the centre of Bairnsdal, it has comfortable accommodation, a Bistro, Barm, Club and off-street parking.
Staff were helpful and checkin and out was fast and relaxed.
The service was fantastic, the room very clean. The shower was a great space. The whole place was amazing. We had to find emergency accommodation for a day earlier due to the previous place having no power. The Customer service was very helpful in giving us an extra night at such short notice. Really enjoyed our stay. Easy to find. It is on the Alpine road to Mt Hotham., but still close to all facilities in Bairnsdale.
The manager was friendly, helpful, and obliging.
The Motel was quiet, despite being central to the main town of Bairnsdale.
The Motel is old, but relatively clean and all facilities were in working order.
The fridge and freezer in particular, was perfect.
The bed was firm and comfortable.
I felt safe and secure in the motel room I stayed in.
The garden cottage has everything to make you feel comfortable home away from home. About 15 min walk into the town centre so you can leave the car at home. For travellers the ability to wash your clothes and dry easily is great. Bairnsdale is a good place to make as a base to visit Paynesville/ Raymond Island and Lakes Entrance.
The service was outstanding and rooms were very clean. I especially liked the provision of fresh milk and free cookies (which is something not seen much any more). Mini bar was well stocked and reasonably priced. Bed was very comfortable and room was spacious. Overall, excellent quality motel for a good price.
The Riversleigh is the most quaint & stunning place to stay, beautifully decorated with Victorian era, perfect location & complimentary breakfast which exceeded my expectations. Everything was perfect - we will definitely return when visiting Bairnsdale again.
No breakfast supplied, the room was small but clean and all things worked, nice garden to relax, no excessive noise, friendly staff, best place for many reasons to stay in Bairnsdale.
We left our car there to go bike riding for four days. Steve the owner was wonderful. This is a cheap, but comfortable motel. Awesome spa bath in room 19
