The surrounding food forest and areas of native planting makes for a lovely outlook and walk. Very comfortable bed and well provided with toiletries etc. Friendly host. Very handy location for touring the Catlins

It is a small, modest village, with many unoccupied baches when I was there. The natural features of water, bush and beach are unspoiled. However, the nearest facilities in Owaka are limited, so expectations should be adjusted accordingly. It has a small 4 Square Supermarket, a couple of cafes, and a very obliging restaurant which was closed for a private party, but made me a nice meal to collect . I returned the plate in the morning!!

We used Pounawea as a Catlins base.
We used Pounawea as a Catlins base. Visited Nugget Point, Purakunui Falls, Matai Falls, McLean Falls, Lake Wilkie, The Lost Gypsy Gallery, Papatowai, Cathedral Caves. Loved the bush walks and spectacular scenery.
A highlight was watching seals frolicking metres from the shoreline.
Great spot for relaxing and unwinding while enjoying nature's beauty.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pounawea.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pounawea. Very quiet and peaceful. Very close to Surat Bay, which had sea lions and seals on beach. 36 kms to Nugget Point lighthouse, Roaring Bay and 26 kms to Kaka Point. Owaka Museum (about 4km) is a must visit and was only $4 each for seniors ($5 for adults). Plenty of accomodation to suit every budget in Pounawea. Owaka township had a small supermarket (Four Square), gas station and cafes.

Gorgeous wee place.
Gorgeous wee place. A playground and loads of walks/water to explore for the kids. Owaka just down the road with a four square, pub and a couple of cafes. Heaps a beautiful drives and walks around the area!

Peaceful scenic location. Easy drive to major Catlins tourist attractions. Short drive to Owaka for supplies. Really need to be self sufficient as there’s not much around apart from the 4square in winter
