Leila's Guest House, hotel in Joqolo

Offering a garden and garden view, Leila's Guest House is situated in Joqolo, 21 km from Alaverdi St. George Cathedral and 47 km from King Erekle II Palace.

Starting from when I entered the place Leyla deyda was there to give me a warm greeting. She arranged my tour guide her daughter was there to translate whenever I needed her. They arranged me a perfect meal consisting of traditional Kist food. I will never regret the meal as it was the best I have ever tasted. The garden outside was colourful and stunning and the guest house where there was a comfy sofa and a small library where you can read books. Wifi was really good. I spoke to the host for over an hour she shared her story of how she opened this place and stories such as the chechen war. She then took me for a short drive to duisi where i bought local produced helva [ chechen sweets] and some other locally produced pastries. Her kitchen was incredible the lay out and the way it was decorated caught my eye. The house overall is decorated in a unique way which can sometimes hypnotise you! She helped me to catch a local bus back to tbilsi in the morning. The local bus was at 6.15 am. The main thing is she woke up early when it was cold, made me breakfast and refused to take any payment. This is the place where you'll get the motherly and family love. in most hostels they treat you as another customer here they treat you like family. absolutely amazing!

Babaneuris Marani, hotel in Joqolo

Set in Babaneuri, 7.8 km from Alaverdi St. George Cathedral, Babaneuris Marani offers accommodation with a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, free private parking, a garden and a terrace.

The setting is lovely but remote. The nearest town is a 15 minute drive . So no options to eat out unless you are willing to drive. The kids play area was a big hit. If you are looking to just read a book and relax, it is perfect.

Loved everything! The guest house itself, the delicious authentic local food, the gorgeous view of the mountains and the river Ilto below! Joqolo is a village in the Pankisi valley.

Joqolo is a village in the Pankisi valley. The valley is inhabited by the Kist minority. They are partially Georgified Chechen Moslems. The valley town of Duisi has 2 architecturally interesting mosques. On Friday just before noon in a side-building of the Old Mosque of Duisi some of the local woman hold a zikr--about an hour of ritual prayer/chant/dance. The zikr is a common sufi practice throughout the Islamic world, but to my knowledge only here do women perform a zikr. Not only was my wife allowed to watch and photograph, even I was allowed to watch. It was unforgettable.

I am familiar with Islam and have traveled to Muslim countries. The guesthouse's tour to provide insight into the Muslim experience in Georgia was a waste. I learned much more on the web about Pankisi without going there. If you were to be able to arrange a "real" tour by an experienced guide, it might be fruitful. The mosques' exterior design we were shown are very interesting but we did not have access inside nor a knowledge introduction to the Islamic community there. The relationship of the Chechen community in Pankisi with Georgia was not evident. It was a unnecessary side trip.

An area of great natural beauty ranging from the fertile valley bottom up to the incredibly scenic mountain tops. The guided horse ride was the perfect way to see the area but maybe discuss the length of the ride (9 hours was a bit much since it had been almost 8 years since I had last ridden a horse. Wandering around the villages running along the valley bottom provide great photo opportunities.
