Castle and cathedral are first class.

Castle and cathedral are first class. Eastgate House very interesting. Good Italian restaurant and plenty of other choices. Everywhere within easy walking distance. Whole High Street noisy on Saturday night. Guildhall Museum, Restoration House and Huguenot Museum shut for our visit. Tourist Information Office shut down

    Rochester is very charming.

Rochester is very charming. The High Street is very lovely with lots of quality second hand shops, if this is your thing. I was absolutely mesmerized by the castle. Well worth climbing the stairs all to the top, especially on a sunny day, the view is amazing. (check for opening times). The cathedral is really beautiful, do go inside if you are there. You can just go in and explore the cathedral or do a guided tour (also check for opening times). The town has a very rich history. You could also choose do do a walking trail along the river. The Royal Crown Pub has a lot of character and the food was really tasty.

I think some money needs to be spent updating the decor of the hotel and rooms. The room rate is inexpensive and hotel is in a good location but it is looking a bit worn. There was a crack in the top corner of room near the front window of our room and given the connection of the hotel with Charles Dickens, the hotel undersells itself. There was also loud music coming from the bar downstairs in same hotel complex.

Rochester is great The Royal Victoria and Bull Hotel is not somewhere anyone should trust to stay. Where was the staff? Why was the gates locked? Why was there not a message on the gate or at reception? How is this hotel allowed to remain in relation to health and safetytt?

Different places and things appeal to different people. OK.

Different places and things appeal to different people. OK. But I'm more than happy to put in a word for Rochester, It was, until 1998 when "Medway" (population 250,000 was created from Rochester, Chatham, Strood, Gillingham and Rainham, all today more or less contiguous) a historic and important small City. Now Rochester is just a "Town", which seems frankly ludicrous. Population only 60,000 and they have problems. The High Street includes far too many Charity Shops, although also some beautiful and historic buildings. Too close to London. But Rochester also has the second oldest Cathedral in England, and still largely Norman Architecture rather than Canterbury's huge late Gothic. Rochester also boasts the tallest and best preserved Norman castle keep in both England and France. Then there are all the links with Charles Dickens and much else besides. And then the Chatham Historic Dockyard, worth a day's time of anyone interested in British history and only a few miles from Rochester. I note the 2021 Lonely Planet Great Britain (page 162) manages just over 2 column inches on Chatham Dockyard. And that's it. Not even a mention of Rochester or "Medway" in the index. That, in my book, is all you need to know about "Guide Books"!

The historic High Street is a short walk from the train station. The pavements and road on the High Street can be uneven, with cobbles in places , which adds to the charm. Favorite places to eat-in are: The Quills (offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails), Padrino's Pizzeria (eat in & takeaway/delivery), Cathedral Pie (offering traditional pie and mash with parsley sauce/gravy, jellied eels), Pizza Express and there are also tapas, Japanese, fish and chips and a variety of cafes and bars. The Cathedral, Castle and local museums are always interesting, with local events going on.

The location was beautiful. Set in the countryside with immaculate garden, plenty of room to park and the barn has been lovingly renovated with tasteful decor and furnishings. The owners were friendly and accommodating with great suggestions of places to eat and visit. The breakfast selection was varied, nicely presented and more importantly delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return when we visit family in Kent again.

Beautiful property, with a fantastic garden. Very quiet property and area, but well placed next to Rochester and the Medway. Fantastic breakfast in my room and hosts very welcoming. Garden with the barn was fantastic too. Room was huge and included a small annex room and large bathroom. No bath, but shower had good pressure and was nice and hot. If you are staying in Kent, I would recommend this hotel.

What a wonderful experience! Truly unique piece of British Maritime history, with fascinating story. Our room enjoyed serene views across the Medway down to Rochester. Breakfast was simple but just what was needed. Inner Dowsing Lightvessel is managed by a lovely couple who could not have been more friendly and helpful. Thank you!

Great location, a walk in to Rochester in 15 minutes, park up the road for the kids. Well equipped for short stays. Great contact and very accommodating host. Several shops at a few minutes walk, highly recommend. We were two adults and two kids and had plenty of space.

This is a cut price hotel, that is quirky and comfortable. It is excellently located at the top of Rochester High Street near the Medway Bridge and in front of the Castle. We love it . If you want a good breakfast then try the Nucleus opposite, but book in advance.

Lovely location and easy to find. I prefer the anonymity of a hotel however my stay for just the 1 night was very relaxed and it felt to me like home from home, only better. The double ensuite room is spacious and very comfortable with everything I needed for my stay.

N/A. By careful parking it is possible to get two cars parked safely. One small and one medium sized and this is important in Rochester, which has long been a parking nightmare.
