The Retreat, Elcot Park, hotel in Newbury

Elcot Park Hotel has undergone a complete refurbishment and is relaunching as ‘The Retreat’; a newly re-imaged 18th-century country house hotel and community beacon, set in 16 acres of magnificent...

So an initially really poor impression. Meal not served, a bartender who ‘short served’ my drink! However, a superb recovery from the management who served me a replacement drink and brought my meal to my room. And charged me for neither! Having worked in a customer facing environment for many years, mistakes happen! It is then the appreciation of a mistake and reparations which leaves the lasting feeling! So 10/10 for those who sorted out my evening. Would I go there again? Would I recommend it to others? Absolutely! A beautiful location with lots to offer and a management team who make things work for the customer!! Well done all! Dr, the Councillor, Past Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster.

The Chequers Hotel, hotel in Newbury

In the heart of Newbury’s town centre, only 5 minutes from junction 13 of the M4 motorway, this traditional 18th century coaching inn offers en suite accommodation.

Within an easy walk of the main shopping area of Newbury, Chequers is a quirky old hotel with comfortable rooms, I think maybe an old coaching inn? Breakfast was good, with a self service cooked selection and a continental table. Not everything on the menu was available for dinner, but we had a lovely meal of sea bass and sticky toffee pudding.

Small market town that has essential shopping and even a family owned department store. There are many walks along the canal or small river that runs around the town. Visit Highclere ( the home of Downton Abbey) or just chill out in the surrounding countryside.

NO response from the hotel or from Booking. Com. Have done nothing to help me out of the situation I find myself in. As long as they have got your money they are happy. The world is not black and white and sometimes shit happens that is outside the normal. Staff training would be a massive leap forward for you guys. You might even get happy customers !!!

Newbury was a bit of a revelation.

Newbury was a bit of a revelation. To be honest all we needed was a place to eat as we had opted not to eat in the Hotel. There were plenty to choose from on the high street and we opted for a Lebanese which had beautiful food with good service. The high street itself was closed but we had a wander around and discovered what would be a very vibrant centre in the day time

We stayed two nights and that was exactly enough for a quick look around Newbury, with a visit next day to Highclere Castle, and a departure the next morning. We visited an art installation in the Corn Exchange. A six metre diameter model of the moon. Very peaceful viewing. However, there was almost nothing in Newbury which made us feel we needed more time, nor any reason to re-visit. We ate in the Lodge Hotel on the Racecourse the first evening. The menu is very limited indeed, basically pizzas, burgers and chicken wings. Next evening we ate at the Swan Inn in Newtown, just south of Newbury. This was a very nice meal. It is easy to get around Newbury because there are plenty of car parks in the town centre and the place is small enough to cover on foot.

I spent a pleasant few hours (4) in Newbury shopping and looking around. In the main Newbury offered the same old same old shops you see in every town centre. However, there was one nice department store which offered a good choice of clothing, shoes, cosmetics and a couple of boutique clothing shops offering reasonably priced different offerings but nothing high end.

Right within walking distance of Newbury town centre. Staff very friendly especially the 'acting' manager who explained why there was no food available at the hotel during our stay as it was going to be refurbished at some point soon and he gave us a discount on the room price because of this. Brilliant. Room clean. Bed comfortable with crisp clean sheets and pillows. Tea/coffee/milk available. Comfortable room. Pubs/cafes/restaurants in close walking distance. Didn't want for anything. A good overnight stay.

Really excellent quality food. Nice atmosphere in the lounge area of the bar we decided to eat there instead of going into restaurant. Staff were very pleasant and attentive We were in standard double with single bed for daughter. Very comfortable room. Location is not far from Newbury and access to M4.

Rooms do not have USB charging outlets. We didn't bring a plug-in adapter, so that was mildly inconvenient. One hotel staff member allowed us to borrow his own personal adapter for a couple hours.

Location, meals and layout of bedroom. There were a number of unexpected extras, e.g sloe gin, bottled water and pillow spray which demonstrated that the hotel was very much customer-focused.
