Centre Of Britain Hotel, hotel in Gilsland

Set in Haltwhistle, 7.5 km from Thirlwall Castle, Centre Of Britain Hotel offers accommodation with a shared lounge, free private parking, a restaurant and a bar.

We are bikers and off street parking is always something we look for when choosing places to stay. The hotel had an excellent courtyard at the rear. As a bonus our rooms were actually little chalets which were also in the courtyard, so our bikes were practically right outside our door. The chalets have the bedrooms on a mezzanine floor, meaning the bathroom and separate sitting area are on the ground floor. Chalet 9 has a sauna too. A little dated but works perfectly well. Breakfast is excellent. A good choice of cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, full English, smoked salmon, avocado on toast, basically something for everyone. The evening meals looked good too, but we didn't eat at the hotel in the evenings, we were out and about. Our hosts and staff were more than welcoming.

Absolutely the perfect place to stay for my two nights allowing me to explore Haltwhistle region and walk part of Hadrian’s Wall. As a solo traveller traveling by train I was very grateful to the hosts collecting me from the station and also from my pub dinner. Room was perfect - warm and inviting. Breakfast was particularly wonderful - literally fluffiest omelette ever!! Love the farm location. Thank you Linda

Lots of walks in the local area.

Lots of walks in the local area. The Bridge Inn was open for drinks and we spent New Year’s Eve in the pub. The owners were friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately Megs tea rooms were closed during our stay but this is recommended locally.

Gilsland was a stop-off point for us walking Hadrian's Wall Path. Due to various mishaps, I felt almost ready to give up but our lovely overnight stay here put me back in the right frame of mind to continue the next day. Very quiet village, a good pub to eat in at night and just minutes from the HW Path.

The hotel was in an excellent location for Hadrians wall and other main towns and cities. Although the hotel was in need of some TLC it was very clean and comfortable. The food served in the bar was excellent

This hotel is set in stunning grounds with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside . The hotel is a beautiful building but the interior is tired and needing attention , but not to the extent of being awful or wasting the 5 nights we spent there . The staff are wonderful and couldn't do enough to help , and the food was delicious, I have coeliac disease therefore have to stick to a gluten free diet which is another thing that this hotel managed to cater for , although the buffet breakfast was a bit if a problem for me , but lunch and dinners were fine . It was a bonus for my husband and I being able to take our dog on this holiday with us . It is also ideally situated to visit tourist attractions such as Hadrians wall . The nearby town of Brampton is worth a visit as is the market town of Hexham .

Large, country hotel in a remote location with fantastic views. Well maintained gardens and a bowling green and putting green. Went there on a coach trip with friends and on discovering they were dog friendly went back a couple of weeks later with my partner and 2 dogs. It’s a good base for exploring both Cumbria and Northumberland as it is on the border. The rooms are quite basic and in need of updating but clean and comfortable. The buffet breakfast was delicious and plentiful, the evening meal in the dining room was mostly good and the bar meals very good. There are walks from the doorsteps (there are printed routes on reception) although we found them a bit too challenging after a period of wet weather. Will definitely return.

The warm welcome and the beautiful way the Dacre House has been restored will be a good memory of our visit to the north of England. It was by far the most beautiful place we have stayed during our holiday. Gilsland itself is a nice village. Beautifully set on the borders of the north penines, northumberland and the nicer parts of the Hadrian wall. The village has a pub with a fine kitchen and a nice mixture of local people and fellow travelers. Just at a minutes walk of the accomodation.

Ideally suited for those walking Hadrian's Wall (it's just off the path) with very friendly hosts. I stayed in the the double room with the fabulous bathroom and it was such a TREAT to have a long soak in the bath after my day's walking. Breakfast was great - brought to my room in these Covid times and my baggage transfer arrangements were all well accommodated. Gilsland is a nice village with a pub for food close by and it's very close to Birdoswald Roman Fort too.

The hotel have thought of everything; it's the little things, the details you don't notice you're missing until you visit a hotel that has them and it's just lovely to see. Given that the hotel was newly opened there were no 'teething problems', the food was great and our dogs were treated like royalty. The staff were friendly, polite and couldn't do enough for you.

Jackie was a fantastic host. Our room / studio was absolutely stunning. Jackie booked us a meal in a nearby hotel restaurant and gave us a lift there and back. Breakfast was 5 stars . The huge bed was very comfortable and we fell in love with Noah.
