This hotel (and its neighborhood) exceeded my expectations. Moon and Chalice is a beautifully designed hotel in a historical building. We only stayed in Kunming for one night, but we should have stayed longer. The area around the hotel is very cosy, has many small bars, shops etc.
I would like to especially thank Mrs. Zhanglingling. She went the extra mile and more. Mrs. Zhanglingling helped us to get SIM cards - which is not easy in China. It took about 2 hours. Afterwards she escorted us to the train-station to help us buying tickets. Thank you so much!!

I liked the help and interaction with the lobby staff and also the staff who assisted me at breakfast answering all my questions and were absolutely professional and lovely people to be associated with. I would like to highlight Vivien at the front desk and Ding Juan who were both extremely helpful and made my stay so much more enjoyable.

stayed at ancient town, very convenient for food. But bear in mind cars not allowed in ancient town, accommodation send luggage carts. Communication in chinese important as they meet you somewhere at the entrance and bring you in with your luggages. No breakfast where I stayed but as early as 7am, shops for breakfast are opened. Need local sim card to get around by Didi. Need an app in english but couldn't get translation. Thankfully spouse could read chinese, did all the ride hailing and maps in chinese. If there was an app in English, would help non speaking/reading chinese. Suggest use a reputable tour company for private tours and plan everything if you can't use mandarin.

Mostly everything was good!...
Mostly everything was good!... I agree it's a five star hotel. What it wasn't so great is that the staff in general doesn't show to be HAPPY!... It's unusual to see SMILES!!!... Also, there's some mosquitos and a few flies around. Hahaha...

It's a laid back city.
It's a laid back city. Slower pace than the other metropolises. I went in May and the weather was beautiful. It's a walkable city but I highly recommend using the Chinese APPs to rent e-bikes. It's the best way to see the city. That's pretty much what I did for my four days there. For local restaurants, get some good recommendations from the staff where you are staying. If you want some good Western food, Salvador's is a good option. Also, Wooden Paradise a good cocktail bar with cheap happy hour deals and a friendly owner. Juan'er is a great cafe that uses Yunnan beans. I didn't visit any special sights, except for Green Park, which is your standard big city park, so I can't comment on them.

Kunming is a non-touristy town that people often pass through. This is such a pity because we were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful parks, the calm atmosphere of the locals playing cards and games, the cute cafes, and the interesting restaurants. Kunming has everything you need but it is toned down compared to other Chinese cities which is what we wanted as we live in Guangzhou. Salvador’s restaurant is a must visit as is Humdinger for a local craft beer. Did I mention that the weather is perfect? It is known for being a city of ‘eternal spring’ for its gorgeous weather.

Unfortunately, my stay was only for one night (layover). My wife told me Kunming was an exceptionally pleasant and scenic place to be, and from what I saw from my limited time on the ground and the from the plane's window, it looks it. I am definitely going back!

Kunming in the middle of winter was a great place to visit.
Kunming in the middle of winter was a great place to visit. Days were sunny and mainly dry. Lots if interesting places to visit in and around the city. Western Hill is only a RMB4 subway ride from the city centre and an excellent place to spend a day. Nationalities village is a good place to understand the culture of the different ethnic groups. The Stone Forest and nearby caves is a gret place for a day trip. Further afield is the Dongchuan red land and the Jiaozi Snow Mountain. There are a good range of halal restaurants in the city.
The homestay host is the happiest, most helpful and enjoyable woman of any accommodation I have ever stayed. She went out of her way to help me as I landed into China for the first time and had lots of questions and some issues. She has the biggest heart and you will laugh often with her. She speaks more English than most accommodations hosts, and that was extremely helpful. The homestay is in a very quiet part of the Ethnic Cultural Village and was enjoyable
We only stayed one night so didn't get to see/use many of the facilities. The bed was so comfortable and warm. Strong shower and good wifi. A fair way from the city centre however a metro line (Line 1) is nearby. Limited English spoken by staff however they did try their best to respond to questions. The hotel also gave us a free shuttle to Kunming South Railway station, a 15 minute drive.
Everything! This is the best place we’ve stayed in China and the perfect place for international travellers - the staff are great, have decent English, location is perfect near lots of the spots to see in Kunming (local markets, the trendy and developed area etc) plus its close to metro line if you want to go elsewhere. The breakfast is decent and rooms are really comfortable and nice.
It’s just beautiful, all the amenities were first class, clean and comfortable. What makes Moon and Chalice stand out from all the other hotels is the staff. Nothing was too much trouble, you are treated like a good friend. If you’re a first timer in China this hotel is a must stay if you’re experienced travelling in China it’s a calm oasis to relax.
We stayed at 4 diff hotels during our trip and this was the best. Really clean and comfortable
Gym was small but well equipped and well maintained.
The rooms were spacious and clean. Beds were really comfortable
The area we are in seemed very hipster 😅lots of trendy cafes around and a really good and affordable massage place just across the street
This is a comfortable hotel located in the central area of Kunming. It is quite a short walk to the nearest Metro station. The staff are kind and helpful. One of the receptionists ordered a coffee delivery from Starbucks for me on her own phone because the hotel restaurant only had instant coffee.
The host was nice and very helpful. She explained everything about her apartment and helped me talk to the taxi driver when I left the airport. The apartment was clean and comfortable. I will definitely stay there again next time I travel to Kunming.
Good location, nice atmosphere, very nice room, spacious and confortable, one of the best we had in our travel in China. Very good value for money. Staff speaks good English, is very helpful and nice. A real hostel!
Well decorated small hotel in a village which is not far from the airport. Spacious chic room. The young owner designed this resort type property perfectly. Free shuttle survives provided. WiFi was okay.
-Amazing, felt more like 5 star hotels compared to other Doubletree Locations
-Room was large
-Free shuttle services provided, make sure to contact the hotel in advance to arrange
Everything, the room was very comfortable and it is not far from the airport, they also provide free airport pick up and drop off service, the owner was very sweet and helpful
Thats simply wow. It was the cheapest one in Kunming but for a solo traveller, it is the best. I was a little anxious about the cleanliness but it exceeded my expectations.
The close proximity to the airport and the jaxtapose with the rural village that the hotel is located in.
The breakfast prepared by the staff was also amazing!
