Gurk (20 minutes' drive down below from where this place is)...

Gurk (20 minutes' drive down below from where this place is) is a sleepy little village with a superb cathedral (make sure you visit the crypt!) What makes Gurk special is its peaceful setting. Make sure you visit the neighbouring village of Strassburg with its super castle. Otherwise there's frankly little to do except glorious walks in the surrounding hills. There are a number of well-signposted 'Hemma' paths (she was a 7th-century abbess/ saint), all leading to Gurk. There's also a lovely swimming lake, the Goggausee, down in the Wimitz valley, about 30 minutes' drive, partly along an unsurfaced road. Make sure you try the local Wimitz beer!
