Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.
There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.
Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.
There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.
If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

The town centre has loads of shops and a large indoor shopping centre. There are several parks and lots of green space available. There was a huge choice of cafes, restaurants and pubs for all price brackets. We went to the 1865 club which holds lots of musical events. We were a bit concerned doing the 30 minute walk through the parks when the event finnished, however we saw at least 3 separate groups of police walking around the town and parks so felt very safe.

We had a really good stay with several nice meals, Found the people very pleasant and helpful. Really good shopping centres. Town was not too big and by the sea with several parks. There was something for all ages. Had all the major entertainments like cinema and ten pin bowling. Lovely museum and art gallery - well worth a visit.

Southampton is a little under-rated as an historic town.
Southampton is a little under-rated as an historic town. The walls are virtually complete on one side, there is one of England's best town gates and there are several old buildings to visit. The Art Gallery is just about the best south of London and the Sea City Museum is well worth a visit- especially for the Titanic story.

Southampton is a lovely city with a bustling town centre.
Southampton is a lovely city with a bustling town centre. It's famous for being the port from where the Titanic set off. I really like West Quay as a shopping mall - there's a lot of good places to eat at. I also like the entire stretch of High Street, there are weekly markets and also some pop ups stalls sometimes. The art gallery and library are free to enter, and you can also enjoy SeaCity Museum for a small fee. It's a wonderful city to walk in and just chill, but it's not as jam packed as London. However, from Southampton you can head to Winchester, the Isle of Wight, Brighton, Bournemouth, Beaulieu and more! There's also Paulton's Park which is home to Peppa Pig World. The buses are usually very efficient, and you have Uber or taxi services everywhere. All in all it's a great place to visit.

Southampton is like most cities in the UK.
Southampton is like most cities in the UK. Large shopping centre with various high street options and eateries. It has a leisure centre for swimming, plenty of gyms and large green spaces / parks to walk and talk in. It has strong ties to the Titanic story, as the ship left from one of the docks there. The museum is worth a visit. The Mayflower theatre has great shows on regularly.
Wonderful apartment right off High Street - we loved our king bed with a nice view towards Town Quay Park, and our own private bathroom off the hall, across the room. Great location, walkable around the old city with its interesting past, its many still-intact walls, and Titanic history. Joe was very personable, and we enjoyed some interesting chats together. We appreciated the morning coffee, cereal and toast before starting our day. Would definitely stay again at Joe's place if we are ever back in Southampton!
If possible I want refund as this was a special trip from London to Southampton but the hotel rooms was not clean, there was hairs all over the beds and on carpets.
We couldn't use the swimming pools as it was always full had to stay in room most of the time as there.was nothing else to do with children. Once we managed to get on to the pool but there was used nappies and dirty towels on floor couldn't stay there long
It was an immaculately clean, well furnished, modern two bed, two bathroom apartment(one room ensuite) with WiFi. It was also in an excellent location with two shops and a pub close by, the latter, 'The Winston' doing traditional bar snacks and meals. Southampton City centre and the cruise terminals were approximately 0.5 miles from the apartment. I would definitely stay here again!
I loved the location of the hotel in the historical district and within walking distance of Southampton's highlights. I especially liked the history of the hotel. The traditional English breakfast was excellent. The manager was very hospitable and gave me a brief tour of the hotel to include the ballroom on second floor, which I enjoyed seeing.
Very clean environment cleaner than some hotels.
Mostly quiet. Was nice to have access to a kitchen and a fridge. I was able to cook a breakfast on the last morning and I used kitchen utensils which were provided. The shops were not a long walk and they were near the station and a bus stop leading into town centre of Southampton.
We stayed at this hotel for only one night but I will definitely be making it one of my favourite place's to stay when near Southampton the food/staff atmosphere cleanliness everything about this hotel was excellent and the young girl who helped me when I arrived was so helpful and polite 5☆☆☆☆☆
Almost everything about the hotel was very nice. Great decor, and the staff were warm and friendly. For able-bodied guests it would be an excellent choice. I have mobility problems and would have liked a few improvements for ease and safety. But, apart from that, great place, and great people.
Absolutely love staying here. Always have a great night sleep as the beds are so comfortable. The room is so clean and offers everything you could need during your stay!! Staff are so friendly and very helpful. Easy walk into town and ubers are cheap from the hotel! Love the decor!!
Hotel was in a good location next to the motorway, with a 10 minutes drive into the city centre or to the University of Southampton. Clean and well maintained hotel with plenty of free parking. Excellent and friendly staff who made you feel welcome. Would recommend.
it's a very nice place to stay with a great breakfast and helpful staff. They have a great location and several places to eat close by. Hotel has also a nice restaurant. its close by walking to the city centre and all historic places
First class , staff very nice , happy to help .had a wonderful stay and thanks fot the chocolates , looking forward to our next trip to Southampton and staying at your hotel again ,thanks again Steve &Bev from stevenage
Location of the hotel - in the very city centre ! This is why I chosen this hotel.
Car park - conveiently behind of the hotel and cheap.
Kind staffs.
OK over all but I do not agree this is 4 star hotel.
Good location for visiting Southampton within walking distance of town center. Staff friendly upon check in and through hotel. Room size was OK, iron/board and hairdryer included which was handy.
well located for downtown and for the cruise port. Clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good with a fairly good selection. Dinner was very good but expensive.
Location was close to an event. Options for food in the surounding area were decent, nothing to do with the hotel though. Booking.com handled our refund quickly.
visited a few of the Pig Hotels and all are excellent so know that it will be lovely, this was the perfect city centre location to visit son at Southampton Uni
