The Old School House, hotel in Haltwhistle

The Old School House, a property with a shared lounge, is located in Haltwhistle, 7.7 km from Thirlwall Castle, 12 km from Housesteads Roman Fort, as well as 39 km from Bywell Castle.

Maybe it looks strange that we gave each question 10 points, but any point deserved it. We are travelling three weeks through England and mostly Scotland, but up to now Kate's and Ian's house was the most so comfortable, beautiful, tasteful and relaxing that we were so happy. How stupid that we only stayed one night, all other guests do longer and some are there for the fourth time. And our hosts are so wonderful. How ever could I choose less than 10 points. And the landscape... So nice and beautiful. And silent... Only the birds sing too loud :) Kate and Ian: thanks so much!

Whiteside Granary, hotel in Haltwhistle

A recently renovated holiday home set in Haltwhistle, Whiteside Granary features a garden. This property offers access to a balcony, free private parking and free WiFi.

This remote property up on the moors is on a working farm surrounded by endless moorland fields and sky. We loved the Granary. It’s small but has everything you might need tastefully decorated. The hot tub was a bonus although rainy weather meant I finally got in there at 7.30am on bank holiday Monday when the sun shone. It’s well located for visiting the Roman forts, Corbridge and walking along the wall.

White Side Cottage, hotel in Haltwhistle

Located in Haltwhistle, in a historic building, 11 km from Thirlwall Castle, White Side Cottage is a holiday home with a garden and terrace.

The farm location is a bit isolated but beautiful. An excellent pub is a mile or two away for a very pleasant dinner. When you drive back to the main road you face a dramatic escarpment with Hadrian's wall running along the top and visible for miles. It was the best view in the area. The large farm is an active place with animals and the three household dogs as a charming greeting committee. It would be an exciting place for children. Nicola had taken great care to provide anything necessary in the flat.

Haltwhistle was a great location to access Hadrians wall and the Roman forts , we were there on May bank holiday Sunday and almost all the town was shut up except a couple of restaurants and a co op shop. On BH Monday there was one pub serving food and they had shut the kitchen by 7.15 pm having run out of food. I found the town deserted which was a shame. We ate in Jethros cafe on the Sunday night which was great , lovely food and waitresses , can recommend that cafe.

Liked Haltwhistle been before , Good Centre for the Roman Wall experience, Would recommend to anybody. Also could leave you car as there is a good bus service in the Town to Newcastle Alston Carlisle and the Roman sites, Good food available in the town also supermarkets. No Post Office or Bank though.

The town is marketed as being the geometric centre of Great Britain. It may well be. It is ideally situated a short drive from Hexham and roughly midway between Carlisle and Newcastle. It is a small town close to Hadrian's Wall and the associated ancient sites. Nightlife is limited as one might expect from a small town. Well worth a visit.

A pleasant and friendly small town ideally positioned to explore Hadrians Wall and a great place to base a walking, cycling and mountain biking holiday. Additionally some great driving roads and little traffic. Some good pubs locally or within a short drive or cycle.

We only spent one night but it is in a perfect spot for visiting Hadrian's Wall. It is near the best museum- Vindolanda and the best section of the wall (Cawfield Quarry) if you want to get a good taste of the Wall but only have a limited amount of time, like we did.

I was walking Hadrian's Wall so it was great that we had the pub on our doorstep for our evening meal and the property was so close to the Hadrian's Wall path. It was lovely being in such clean air in the heart of Northumberland National park.

Excellent location, 7 mins walk from Haltwhistle station. The Hadrian’s Wall Bus stops right outside the hotel. The room was cosy and clean, and the bed was very comfortable. Bathroom toiletries included hair conditioner: a wonderful, unexpected bonus! The cooked breakfasts were delicious and very good value for money. Food in general was excellent: we had dinner here every day. The staff were warm and welcoming, and always ready to help, despite how crazy busy the restaurant was!

I loved the location , the simple old style decor and fittings, lots of kitchen equipment. I liked the helpful contact with Lyn who is very knowledgeable and helpful. Also , I did not use my car all week! the 685 bus, ( use stagecoach it is double decker ) , runs hourly and is a beautiful route, and Haltwhistle station is only a brief walk away . Both bus and train run along Hadrians Wall, Newcastle to Carlisle.

Great service all round, the room was one of the suites and was very roomy and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice and very efficient service. The hotel is an amazing historic building and gives a wonderful feel of 16th century ‘Reiver’ accommodation and is an ideal base for exploring the Roman ruins and Hadrian’s Wall. All staff were really friendly and helpful, great people!

This is a lovely family farm not too far from Haltwhistle and Hadrian's Wall. We had a big room with walk in shower. Breakfast was in the main house and it was really really good! The proprietor picked us up at the train and then showed us the walking paths to get back to town and up to Hadrian's wall. I would love to return to this amazing place.

This is a great little hotel. The owners and staff are very friendly and helpful. David is very knowledgeable of the area. Leigh made me feel like I was more than just another random guest. The food is fantastic. Really just a great little hotel. If I ever make it back to this side of the world again, definitely staying here again.

We are regular visitors to Haltwhistle (wife was born there and went to school in this building when it was the local primary school ). We have stayed at several hotels or B&Bs. This was by far the best and we’ll be staying again. Rooms very tastefully refurbished and excellent, inventive breakfast choices

What a lovely place - well appointed, spacious and adjoining a great pub. We were walking Hadrian's Wall and the location couldn't be better. The owners were very hospitable - even to the extent of offering to drive me back to Haltwhistle to retrieve my car! Highly recommend.
