Kawayu Onsen, Tanabe
Located just 12 km from Hosshinmon Oji Shrine, Minshuku Sumiya features accommodation in Tanabe with access to an open-air bath, a bar, as well as a housekeeping service. This 2-star ryokan offers a spa experience, with its hot spring bath and public bath. The ryokan provides rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. The Japanese breakfast was really amazing. This Sumiya has not been renovated since the 70s, however, it doesn't matter because ithe decor added lots of charm and it is certainly a quirky place. I will definitely stay again and recommend others do too as long as you aren't super fussy because it is older style, but for the price that is what you would expect. It is clean and the owners are happy and warm and friendly.

Amazing experience - once in a lifetime. Beautiful temple and place to stay. I did the meditation with one of the monks and attended the morning prayer.

Absolutely authentic ryokan and hot spring experience.
While Matsuya has basic amenities and facilities, the good thing about it is that guests are allowed to use the onsen at its sister hotel, Midoriya which is just a 3-4min walk away. The Midoriya has pretty decent facilities from massage chairs to a bigger onsen, outdoor bathing area, laundry room etc. The view from the room was pretty decent and the futon beds were comfortable but there is not much floor space for large luggage. It should be ok if you're hiking and making this a pit stop.
Ryokan house near station Have onsen
Large tatami room overlooking the river. Welcome onsen after two days on the Kumamo Kodo. The staff were excellent and went out of their way to look after my companion who had twisted his ankle.
Dinner had so many vegan dishes and they were delicious. Breakfast was smaller but still filling. It won't be a western breakfast. The futon ended up being comfy and warm but the halls were cold in the morning. I suggest arriving at the start of check in to take full advantage of everything there is (enjoying the pond, onsen, tea in room while reading the info on ceremonies). Location was great for the big 3 sites, if you don't mind walk 20 minutes in either direction.
Unique experience of lodging in a beautiful buddhist temple. The place has a very special atmosphere. The (buddhist vegetarian) dinner and breakfast were rich and very tasty. The staff was super welcoming and friendly. Good onsen bath. Traditional Japanese-style room (tatami mats and futon beds) was really spatious and comfortable.
A good hostel, in a good location (though Yunomine onsen is not that big). It had a nice tatami common area that even had a few games provided, such as go. The hostel had its own private hot springs, that are free to use: a lovely outdoor bath, a relatively big indoor bath and a rather small indoor bath. We had booked a private room, not big but fine with three persons. We received bento boxes for dinner and you could grab rice for free. There was also free rice porridge for breakfast. Overall very good value for the price.
I had a great time in Nagisaya Hotel. The room is in traditionnel japanese style (tatami and futon on floor) and had a wonderful view on the sea. The hotel offers interior and exterior onsen where I had my best time with the view on the moutain and a little on the sea (only men onsen has total view on the sea, women are on the other side). The staff is really friendly.
Dinner and breakfast was superb. Loved the old style room with the tatami mats, futon , river view/sounds and japanese style table and chairs. Tattoo friendly onsen in this place and bonus onsen by the river. Staff friendly, helpful and informative. Wi fi reception excellent!
Very nice owner. Good location close to the bus stop. Genuine Japanese experience of staying in Ryokan, among others with sleeping on the tatami. Digging own onsen at a river side is amazing. Food needs to ordered earlier than on arrival.
