This was a magical deep dive into a ryokan/onsen experience that time forgot. Could have been on a movie set but this was authentic!

This property was exceptional in every way. Tucked away in the mountains, with incredible views at every turn. The building is an old Edo style home, and once you check in you will feel like you’ve stepped back in time (but with modern amenities). The hot springs and food were also amazing.

That we had to leave so soon!

Everything! The big, Japanese style room had a gorgeous view. The whole place was very atmospheric with lots of small nieches to relax. They have both public and private baths, and the ones we tried were lovely. The private baths cannot be reserved, but we always found at least one available. The staff was super friendly and helpful despite a slight language barrier (my Japanese is rather weak). Dinner and breakfast were plentiful, interesting and delicious. Easy to reach by bus from Takayama.

Pillows we're made of beads (I think) which weren't exactly the most comfortable so upgrading those would be a big plus.

Place was amazing, food was amazing and staff was amazing! The private onsens were also fab, and we never really had to wait to use any of the ones available. We didn't use the public ones. The area was a bit far away from anything within walking distance (i.e. The closest town etc) but it is the probably the price to pay to stay in such an amazing and scenic location!

Bathroom area in the room could be retouched, particularly the walls. Some of the furnishings are a bit out of date and random.

Convenient bus access from Hirayu Onsen station. Cozy, rustic vibe with fire pit and bear skin rugs in the lobby. Very large property with multiple bathing facilities - private tubs both inside and outside, public bathing areas both inside and outside. Comfortable beds. Amazing dinner in private room and one of the best Japanese breakfasts I've ever had!

An English sign at the entrance might have been useful as it is a very cute pathway and you don't immediately realize as a foreigner that that's the entrance to the hotel.

Fantastic stay a traditional location. Best food we had on the whole trip, very fresh and local! Amazing service and hospitality. The staff was extremely kind and helpful and drove us to 3 different locations with their car so we could withdraw some cash from an ATM. We loved the onsen and natural water, there are many different baths inside and outside, public and also private. Beautifully decorated, lots of thought has been put into the hotel and we were welcomed with a crackling fire. Definitely highly recommend! Also easy to reach with an infrequent bus from Kamikochi.

Every single detail at Yumoto Choza was spectacular! We had a wonderful and relaxing time thanks to the friendly and enthusiastic staff, the beautiful and cozy accommodations (both private and "public" areas), the extensive bath and relaxation options, and the delicious food! We would return here in a heartbeat and recommend this lodging/bath option to anyone looking to experience authentic culture and relaxation. Thank you!!!

Nothing it was perfect

It was incredible. The room is big and very nice and cozy. It felt like home directly. The view from the room is just wow. The onsen is amazing with a bath inside and one outside. The dinner was unbelievable, we had an amazing experience. Breakfast was also very good. We had an amazing time.

There were several private baths that had both an indoor bathing area with a hinoki tub and a rotemburo. You get to try a wide variety of traditional food at breakfast and dinner; some of our favorites were Hida beef sukiyaki and grilled fish. The staff are superb and there is also a small gift shop with many souvenirs to choose from.
