Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

AustraliaTruly exceptional service from two of the older women working there. They taught us how to eat the traditional breakfast which they made fresh in front of us. The staff thought of everything and did little things like cleaning the wheels of our suitcases by hand. The location of our room looked over the stream and you could hear the relaxing sound of the water. Overall we loved the trip and would highly recommend it.

NetherlandsNothing, It was great!
There was a very nice atmosphere created by the traditional Japanese building and antiques around the whole ryokan. On top of that the personnel was super nice!

DenmarkBeautiful rooms that really give you the feeling of being in Japan, very nice owners, I loved how they served a pot of matcha tea on arrival. They put a lot of love into this place and it really shows. The location is very good as well, close to the old neighbourhood and the morning market. Definitely the best stay we had in Japan, if not ever.

United States of AmericaThere was often a wait to use the shared shower/bath. (There was never a wait for the toilets.)
The owners were amazing and our breakfast each morning was wonderful. The place is a little worn and cluttered with antiques but I think it just adds to the charm.

United States of AmericaIf you value privacy and luxury, this is not the place for you. The shared baths were slightly inconvenient in the mornings when many people wanted to shower. And the walls aren't terribly thick so if you have loud neighbors, that could be a little bit of an issue.
This ryokan has a homey, lived in feel. It could use a bit of renovation truth be told. The carpets and walls are a bit worn. But the couple who run it and the staff who work for them are just so incredibly kind and lovely and the food and location are so excellent, you forgive the bit of shabbiness. The meals are amazing and the location across the river from the morning market is ideal. The rooms we were in were spacious and comfortable and I believe all the rooms have a view of the river.

United States of AmericaWish I had reserved a riverside room! Wish I had stayed longer!
Hosts were amazing. Great experience. Would go back here again. The whole town was amazing. I thought sharing bathrooms would be difficult but it was fine. I also enjoyed soaking in the baths available. There are also many sinks available around the house.

United States of AmericaThis is a very old house with fairly thin walls so you can hear other guests. The onsen room is super fun but sometimes you have to wait awhile to use it.
The staff was soooo friendly! We loved everyone there. The location is prime in the old city right along the river and the home-cooked Japanese breakfast is truly an experience. I've stayed in dozens and dozens of hotels and this one may well be my favorite ever. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay another night.

ArgentinaNothing to complain about since the place fullfilled all our expectations of staying at a japanese rokyan for the first time. Only minor inconvenience is that we could hear some noise from guests at adjacent rooms, also at dinner.
The place felt like a true japanese Ryokan, very well attended by an old couple, extremely kind and taking care of every detail. Even if their english was limited we could communicate quite well. Stayed at a room with private bathroom looking over the river, which was quite spacious. The japanese dinner was incredible, several dishes all just home cooked, served at a private dinning room with view of the garden. For the breakfast we were allowed to choose the continental instead of the japanese that was better for us. Being a Ryokan, we slept on a fouton on 5he floor, however, to make us more comfortable, the old lady laid the fouton over a doble slim mattres that showed amazing diligence to make guests feel well.

United States of AmericaA wonderful and unique experience. Very traditional Ryokan right next to the Miyagawa River in Takayama. Such friendly owners and staff. My dinner and breakfast were served in a very cool private room. The food was incredible and the service was so kind. They really wanted guests to be happy! Sometimes you find a real gem by accident, this was that!

United States of AmericaThis was our third stay at Sumiyoshi Ryokan. It is always delightful, an antique building overlooking a garden right on the river across from the historic center of Takayama. The inn is full of character, with old furnishings, and the proprietors, though speaking little English, go out of their way to accommodate you. Rooms are Japanese style, with shoji screens and floor futons for sleeping. There are two comfortable Japanese baths that are perfect after a day of sightseeing. Dinner is many courses and delicious, the breakfast has a choice between Japanese or Western.

New ZealandSince this is a traditional ryokan, you can hear some of the guest if they are loud. Which we experienced a bit but not a deal breaker. The toilet and sink area is shared so that can be a concern for some, to be honest I thought it would be an issue but it definitely wasn't as the limited number of rooms ensures that there's not too much guest at any time.
Almost everything, but number one would be the staff. They are AMAZING and the food is second to none. This was the number one highlight of our visit in Japan. If you ever wanted to experience a ryokan or get a true Japanese experience, stay here you won't regret it
