Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Everything during our stay was incredibly special. From Maki-san’s and her mum’s hospitality to the food and the building itself. Maki was extremely accommodating and kind giving us recommendations for hikes and even bringing us close to the starting point of the main togakushi shrines hike. Her English is great and communication was also easy. Her mum is the best chef ever, the food which is included in the price is out of this world. I felt like the whole experience was like taking part in a banquet with different courses and drinks every few minutes. This is both for dinner and breakfast. Additionally they have an Onsen in the property which is perfect after a day of hiking. The rooms are so gorgeous, lots of attention to detail everywhere. Loved sleeping on the futon on tatami. The kotatsu is also very comfortable and I guess during winter is a must. Maki took a lot of time explaining to us things about Japanese culture and traditions, it was very enriching. As with other reviews, staying here was the highlight of our 20 days in Japan. I hope we can come back one day.

BrazilThis was the place I liked the most during my entire 2 months stay in Japan. This was the place I felt most welcomed and taken care of. This was the place I had the opportunity to witness the best omotenashi I had in Japan. I stayed for three nights during snowy winter at Shiroganeya and could easily stay longer. Maki and her mother paid attention to every detail. Very convenient area to use as a base for exploring the area, delicious food prepared by Maki's mother, lovely atmosphere, beautiful and traditional house full of family history. I highly recommend people staying here for exploring Togakushi area. I will definitely come back and staying again. I hope next time during autumn. Thank you very much Maki!

Maki and her Mom were super nice to us during our entire stay( 2 nights). A lot of effort went into everything and you can tell how hard they work. If that wasn’t enough, they also drove us around a little which was so generous. The rooms are very well maintained and taken care of. Food was amazing too. Overall our stay was absolutely amazing and we might be coming back next time we visit.

United StatesNothing. This was the best stay I've ever had, and it makes me want to lower the grades of prior places I've stayed because this has set a new high bar. 15/10.
Everything about this location was amazing. The owner and her mother are wonderful people and maintain a spotless ryokan. The rooms are well kept, the food is amazing, the two different onsens are both lovely. I took a photo of one of them but my photo does not do it justice, it's perfect. The view from our room was beautiful, and on clear days the mountain range shines in the evening. The location is only a brief walk away from the bus stop, and is in a fantastic spot to go visit shrines. They listen to your tastes as you stay and can alter the meals as needed, but I highly suggest enjoying the authentic cuisine they make. Even if it isn't to your taste, at least try everything, as even some things we didn't enjoy at other locations were cooked superbly. I implore anyone and everyone to stay here, it was the best location I've ever stayed at, in addition to being foreigner friendly. Maki-san should take great pride in her work, she has created a truly wonderful and welcoming place. If I ever get the chance to come back to Japan, I would not be able to leave without staying at least a few more nights here.

BrazilMaki is an incredible host, a kind person, who will do anything to make you feel at home and special. One of those people who make traveling a wonderful experience and a great opportunity to meet people who will broaden your vision of the world. Regarding accommodations, the bed surprised us with its comfort. The food made by Maki's mother is a delight, one of the most memorable and special meals. We are very happy to have included Togakushi in our itinerary. Certainly a place that we would recommend to our friends with our eyes closed. Thankful for everything.

United StatesI loved everything. This is true Japanese family hospitality and kindness.
The kindest host, Maki-san. The most delicious food I have had in Japan. Lovely ryokan home. Incredible hospitality. Just 10 out of 10. The Togakushi shrines are right nearby. Seriously, the food alone and the relaxing Onsen were so delightful. Thank you, Maki-san. (For non-Japanese, be sure to understand a little about how ryokan works and what the traditional inn is like. But Maki-san will teach you all you need to know!

AustraliaSimply the best accomodation I have experienced anywhere! Our stay with Maki, her Mother and Kenta dog was relaxing and magical after a week in Tokyo and Maki does absolutley everything to make you feel welcome and at home with her gentle, warm hospitality, The Ryokan itself is an elegant traditional building and is beautifully kept. The amazing Kaiseki dinner and breakfasts that Makis mother presents every night are a wonderful way to experience traditional japanese food after a relaxing onsen bath. Maki was simply the best host, she even drove us up to the start of our walk trail and booked our lunchtime soba restaurant. The local area is breathtaking even in late autumn / early winter and a walk around the shrines is enough to fill a very pleasant day, Wel ove you Maki and we will be back!

AustraliaWe enjoyed every minute staying with Maki san and her family. The hotel/Ryokan was so well looked after and the facilities were very good. The room we stayed in was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed the onsen. We frequently visit Japan and hands down, this was one of the best. Our host, Maki san and her family went above and beyond. The hospitality of Maki san and her family just made the experience staying with them so special. We arrived just after lunch with the intention of hiking to the shrines. Maki san wanted to ensure that we had enough time to see the upper shrine and was so kind to drive us to the entrance. Maki san's mother cooks the food they serve us for dinner and breakfast. My husband and I practically rolled out of the dinner room. It was so delicious we couldn't help but eat everything. The family has the cutest dog named Kenta.

Lady boss Maki was very hospitable and friendly. Dinner was exceptional. Beef was best - melts in your mouth! Portion was very generous. Inn is located less than 3 minutes walk to Lower Togakushi Shrine. Very clean and homely stay. Lady boss recommended alternative hiking route via the Kagami-Ike (Mirror Pond) and even offered to drive us there. Hike continued to Upper Togakushi Shrine and then downhill towards the rest of the shrines till Lower Shrine. Easier hiking route. She even made advance reservation for us, for the best soba noodles shop Uzuraya (waiting time can be up to 2 hours!) - we avoided the queue and got a table as soon as we arrive at the shop.

United StatesThe Inn has a long and interesting history and is a traditional Japanese Inn where the proprietor treats you like an honored guest and personal friend. The food served is sourced locally, tastes wonderful, and is presented beautifully. The proprietor, Maki, patiently explains everything about the food, staying at a Ryokan, the in-house Onsen, and what to do in the area. The rooms are adorned with art and historical artifacts and the location of the Inn is perfect. The stay here was the highlight of our trip to Japan.

Complete with incredible homemade food, private onsen and beautiful japanese-style rooms overlooking the stunning mountains of Togakushi. Maki-san and her mother were so kind, and even took us round the sites by car as my husband couldn't walk at the time. By the last day we didn't want to go home!
