Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

New ZealandA little bit further than the other Ryokans so you're not right by the action or near the small stores, but it's only a 5 min walk which isn't too bad
The onsens were amazing both the private and public ones! Nice view as well in the room and it was massive. The food and service was fantastic

HungaryNothing to mention.
Very nice hospitality of staff and authentic service with true ryokan experience. Tasty food dishes for both dinner and breakfast. The public onsen has an indoor and outdoor bath, the latter having a really nice atmosphere due to the natural surroundings. Although we had no private bathroom, the room was large, very clean, silent and comfortable overall.

SingaporeI would still prefer if they at least have a shower (not a bathtub, just a shower) for us to use at night when we don't feel like going to the onsen and want to have a quick rinse.
I arrived pretty early before check in time (around 10:35 am) and the check in time wasn't until 1500, I called the hotel about it and they offered to pick me up at the bus stop at 10:35 and have a shuttle service pick me up and drop me off at the hotel with no additional charge. I was also able to store my luggage with them and it was promptly moved to my room before I checked in as well. Even though I understood some Japanese as they guide me through some details when dropping off the luggage, when checking in they still offered a Chinese staff member who promptly showed me to my room. (Though the main staff told her I understood Japanese which was quite flattering even though I'm not even N5) The room is really spacious and there is only a toilet in the room (no bathroom). During dinner, they would set up your futon in your room as well. You'll be required to go to a different floor for your meal as well unlike other ryokans where they serve you in your room, but you will get your individual room at the food hall which was great as well. The same Chinese staff then proceeded to guide me through each individual dishes and I enjoyed every one of them. Even though the hotel is up a slope and seems far from the town center, the town is small overall so it's not much of a hassle if you want to take a day to explore and do some onsen hopping. You'll also be able to wear their yukata and shoes out to do the onsen hopping in other ryokans without the need to rent it at the visitor centre. When checking out, you can also call the front desk to help to carry your luggage up back to the lobby as you will need to climb up some stairs as there is no lift in the hotel, they'll also arrange a shuttle bus to fetch you back to the bus stop where you will take the bus to your next destination. Overall I really enjoyed the ryokan and would recommend it to everyone else who visits kurokawa onsen!

The outside onsen was perfect and exactly what I had hoped for my. Also we had it all to ourselves in the afternoon which allowed us to peacefully enjoy the forest scenery while bathing in this beautiful onsen all by ourselves. Our tattoos were not a problem and the staff was incredibly helpful. Both dinner and breakfast were exceptional and traditional Japanese meals with multiple courses. You can also book their private onsen which is only 1000 yen for 45 min.

United KingdomIt's a bit far from the center if you've got luggage - was too late for us but you should let them know to arrange a pick up at bus stop, as they kindly delivered our luggage to the bus stop for us on the way back.
High chance of getting the onsen to yourself (hotel guests only in the evenings, and there are probably less than a dozen rooms). And it's a very nice indoor+outdoor onsen! Huge traditional breakfast in private little booths was amazing.

CanadaThe private onsen is great, but if someone booked an onsen next door, you can hear them pretty clearly.
The staff were super friendly and provided clear instructions. It was located a bit further up from some of the centrally located ryokan in Kurokawa, but still very close especially if walking (just be prepared to drive on narrow, hilly roads if coming by car). So, it felt secluded enough. The room we had was spacious and had a lot of good amenities (including a cookie!). The kaiseki meals provided, both dinner and breakfast, were filling and delicious (barely needed a lunch). They change up the selection a little from day to day, but not too much; if we stayed more than two nights it may have started to feel a bit samey. Didn't seem too busy when we were there, so often had the onsen to ourselves after public bath times were finished.

Everything was perfect, especially the service. We took a bus there and the staff picked our luggage up at the bus station and let us explore the small town freely, and lent us umbrella since it was drizzling. The cook accommodated to our diet restriction and made us a very sumptuous meal at dinner and lunch. The Onsens are good too. There were not many guests so we basically enjoyed them as private ones. The place is 8 minutes hike from the town but since the staff offered us shuttle from and to the bus station, commuting is no problem at all.

United StatesThe meals were amazing and the dining room staff so wonderful, always bowing and being endlessly cheerful. They have your meals set up and when you arrive at your assigned time, everything is ready to go, no waiting. There is usually a table top grill and gas powered small stove to heat your soup. We gave them advance notice (at least 3 days) that we did not eat meat and they accommodated dietary needs nicely. You are set up in dining compartments with a bell that you buzz for service and the staff would literally come running, always with a smile. It made me uncomfortable to summon people in that manner, but I guess it is common practice there, so it's okay.
Ryokan stays can be quite pricey, but this one was reasonable compared to the others closer to the main street. But the advantage of being several minutes walk from the main area is that it is much more peaceful and your onsen is not crowded by day trippers. I luxuriated in having both indoor and outdoor springs all to myself each afternoon. The outdoor onsen sits against a forested hillside which made you feel immersed in nature. I went for a run further up the road and found some great trails into the hills that were fantastic. The gentleman who picked us up and dropped us off in the complimentary shuttle was absolutely lovely, as was the woman who checked us in and out. We also appreciated that she offered to help us reserve our bus to the next town, an unexpected courtesy of a knowing professional. Our room was immaculate and we enjoyed the chairs in the veranda overlooking the forested hillside. All the facilities were beautiful with newer updates to compliment the traditional for a very comfortable stay in one of the most beautiful onsen towns we have every visited.
