Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomIt was very noisy. The people in the room above us kept us up until 1am. You could hear every footstep on the floor above and there noise of the sliding wooden door bashing every time they went in/out travelled through the whole building. Surely the owner can put some padding in the door frame so it doesn’t slam so loudly. Also the washer & dryer was way more expensive than every other hotel we’ve stayed at in Japan - ¥100 for ten minutes! In other hotels that gets you 30 mins at least.
Nice big room with comfy futons. Nice design

The private bath facility is really great and the price is quite reasonable.

JapanIt has nothing to do with Ryokan, so I think they shouldnt use this term in the name because it is misleading. It feels more like high-class hostel with private rooms.
Its clean, it has everything you need. TV was big and new. Location is good. Wi-fi works. There is private sento for free.

Japan2 very small pillows were provided for our group of 3. Wind outside caused loud window rattling/banging which kept us up at night (It wasn’t a typhoon or anything, just normal wind)
Conveniently located and room was a good size

FinlandThere is no shower in the room, and the only showers are in the onsen, so often you have to wait to get shower. Not comfortable when you come from the beach.

GermanyFor the bike rental, keep in mind that the largest size they have corresponds to large in Japanese standard. For me, as a tall European, the largest size was still way too small.
It's a small and nice place. The small private hot baths are great to end or start the day. I liked staying there. The bike rental they offer was very useful.

JapanWindows in rooms facing cliffs/road don't block noise at all, so every car/bike passing the hotel at night sounds as if it was literally inside the room (disposable earpluggs available in the room).
Very comfortable, well-fitted and spacious room, you can use private onsen (almost) anytime. Staff at the reception is only available during set hours, but friendly personnel still let me leave my baggage before the check-in time so that I could freely go sightseeing. It's pretty far from famous local beaches, but it's a walking distance from the train station (and across the street from bus stop), which was my main priority.

GermanyBath is functional but could be nicer. Close to a big road so it's not the most quiet place. They're a bit strict about check-in times, we arrived at 15:50 but they made us wait until 16:00.
Room was nice and big enough for two. AC works well. No problems with the shared bathroom. The location is alright (10 min walk from the station) but could be better. There's a good and cheap fish restaurant close by but nothing else much. There's a bus stop right in front to take a bus to Shirahama.

United StatesCheck in time at 4pm was a bit late. I wish they were more flexible. We had to wait a couple of hours with nothing to do in the area. Can hear cars on the street at night.

CanadaThe room was a little dusty and the futon and comforter smelled like b.o. Location is in between all the places you may want to go, however that also means its not really super close to anywhere. I also was surprised at how expensive the bike rental was by japanese hotel bike rental standards, I don't regret renting the bike though.
The bikes they rent are light, staff are very nice. I didn't have to wait for the onsen and I enjoyed soaking in it every night.
