Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

GermanySleeping in a traditional room on a futon on the ground is a nice experience and I surely don't regret booking. It was simply not the best night I had during my stay in Japan, which I kind of expected before booking. Simply something to be prepared for to avoid disappointment.
Great Hotel to stay on Miyajima and to experience the island particularly in the morning with fewer tourists (in the evening there were still many people on the island rather long). Technically a stay on the island itself is not necessarily needed, as the ferry services (~10min from Miyajimaguchi) start quite early in the morning already and you could also stay close by the ferry terminal there. I stayed on the island primairliy to see the sun rise there, which depending on the time during the year might be outside the ferry schedule... for such a case this hotel is great. The hotel has a nice onsen, which you might need to use as some rooms dont have private showers. The staff was very friendly and very keen on somehow compensating me for missing out on breakfast (although booked) because I had to leave right at breakfast starting time for the sun rise. I was e.g. offered to take some pre-packed buns from the shop as replacement at least - so great service and staff that cares.

NetherlandsThe bathroom was a bit small and our room at least looked a bit old, but it was very clean.
The staff was super friendly, the dinner and breakfast exceptional. The japanese experience they offer is great: japanese room with futon, kimonos for every guest, onsen open for guests almost all day, authentic japanese food, etc. very good value for money. totally recommended!

NetherlandsUpon arrival, there were quite a few tiny flies in the room, buzzing near the light. Later in the evening, they would fly lower. For breakfast, multiple dishes were served that contained fish (fish stock or tiny fish as topping), even though we indicated that one person did not eat fish.
The room was spacious, with enough room for the table and later the futon beds (6 mattresses were provided which we stacked for 2 beds). The kaiseki-style dinner was tasty and the public bath was comfortable (both times we went, it was not that busy). Although the location of the hotel is a bit further from the main shopping/restaurant area, it is right next to the Forest trail, which goes up to Mount Misen.

United KingdomThis might not cater so well to people with fussy palates or who prefer more Western food (although I saw you can request this in advance for children). This didn’t bother us, just worth flagging up given some of the previous reviews.
We enjoyed the opportunity to try a more traditional accommodation experience with the Japanese style rooms, dressing up in our robes for dinner, and the dinner itself was really fun. It’s very traditional so we didn’t necessarily love every single item on the menu but it was great to be able to try so many dishes (including one you cook yourself) and we left feeling very full! The hotel is on the other end of town from the ferry terminal but they provide free transfers and you are very close to the shrine so great to pop out in the morning before the crowds arrive.

United KingdomThe hotel could do with a refresh as a little tatty, but ok and already reflected in price.
The hotel is situated away from the port in a quiet area just opposite the aquarium. You can see the sea from your window. We had a very nice walk towards the temple/gate in the evening after dark with hardly a person to see. Japanese kaiseki-style dinner and breakfast served at the table and was tasty. Not many options for those who would prefer western-style options, though. We requested for no meat for one of us before arrivign and that was taken into account no problem. This is a traditional japanese inn, the room was comfortable with pull-out sofa for the third person, and good value.

SingaporeIt would have been better if they informed us earlier that we had to reserve a shuttle service back to the ferry in advance as we did not know and almost did not manage to get a ride back to the ferry terminal.
We really liked how the staff were very engaging and helpful. The free shuttle service from the ferry to the hotel was great and u could also get the staff to collect ur luggage while u travelled around miyajima island in the mean time. The food was great too and very filling.

SingaporePublic bath/onsen was just a pool, maybe a bit underwhelming for a ryokan. But it was cleaned well and was comfortable.

FranceNothing! It was great, everything we expected.
When we arrived there were deers chilling right in front of the ryokan... It's a bit isolated from the city, which makes it a quiet spot, easy to go hiking from. The public bath has a big window, I went there late at night, I was the only one, with the lights illuminating the trees it was a really peaceful experience. Great traditional japanese breakfast, very copious. There is a small souvenir shop in the lobby. You can really get the ryokan experience here. And for a ryokan in Miyajima it's not that expensive!

United StatesThe meals, while still very good, were not as spectacular as during our previous visit in 2018. Also, the location, by the aquarium is a little out of the way - this could be a plus or minus depending on your preferences.

United KingdomOur room could do with redecoration, but overall the experience lived up to our expectation.
Very attentive staff. Complimentary car to and from the ferry terminal, allowing us to arrive before checkin and leave hours after checking out. Traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast, as well as a traditional ryokan style room. Yakuta and slippers provided. Great experience. Lovely to be able to explore the quiet island in the evening and early morning.
