Secluded traditional Japanese oasis in the mountains

This was a one of a kind experience! The hotel was tucked into the mountains surround by beautiful greenery and gardens. The staff was very friendly and attentive. There is no need to leave the hotel once you’re there! Check in was accompanied with tea and treats. The rooms are traditional Japanese style and suited with traditional clothing (yakuta) and Pyjamas. We had a private onsen and deck which gave us the perfect secluded space to relax. Dinner and breakfast were included with the price which offered an exquisite traditional Kaiseki menu - this is very different than typical western food (for those who are pickier eaters). There is also a self service bar in the lobby (cannot take drinks to the room). Can highly recommend the Shoshu and lemon soda!

Our stay was excellent. All the staff were warm and welcoming, our bed was so comfortable, and the onsen of course was great! My wife and I made use of the private onsen once per day (after dinner on the day of our arrival and before breakfast the next day), and we each used the public onsen as well, which are separated by gender. The traditional breakfast and dinner was also great – some of the ingredients and flavors were very new to us, so it was a cool experience to try food so different to what we're used to. We left each meal completely stuffed! They also provided us with yukata to wear during our stay, which was fun to wear around the property and to our meals. It really felt like a romantic, peaceful getaway!

My daughter and I stayed here for two nights. We had the most amazing experience staying at this beautiful ryokan! The staff were very attentive, friendly and helpful. Breakfast and dinner included were delicious and visually stunning. The room was large, spacious and immaculate, and we had our own private onsen with beautiful garden view. They provided complimentary drinks in the room fridge plus coffee and tea. It was such a pleasant, serene and peaceful experience, and the most memorable and unforgettable experience of our first visit to Japan! Thank you Matsuzakaya Honten staff for your warm hospitality!

Would be great to have a bit longer private onsen time :)

Cool onsen hotel with traditional decor and room styles. The room was huge and very nicely planned. Each room had dedicated eating table so even the dinning experience was very organized.

Maybe it’s better to have a variety of drink sets in the lobby bar. I would prefer plum wine to sho-chu.

The quality of Hot spring water is great

    NIL. Everything is perfect.

The meals were exceptional in this Ryokan. However what made my day was the attention to details of the staff in the hotel. The staff noticed that my sister's birthday was approaching and prepared a little gift for my sister - during meal service and check-out. The level of service went beyond the bar of any other hotel I have stayed, thank you for making our stay exceptional! I would love to return in future and visit this hotel again. Well done hotel staff!

The place is absolutely stunning! The said the place goes way back as 1662 but it still has this beautiful traditional look to it while kind of looking modern even. The staff in the facility were also extremely friendly and helpful, and what's more they knew english very well! For our stay we had a japanese suite and in my opinion even though it cost a little bit more, the onsen bath outside and the meals which were included to the price made it definitely worth it! And the room was also very beautiful traditional japanese style. And you have a free open service bar in the facility whenever you want to drink coffee, tea, beer etc. We booked this place for 2 nights so that we could relax a little at the end of our trip, and it was so worth it! I can not recommend this place enough if you want to experience a traditional ryokan with amazing food and onsen!

    Nothing to comment on here!

Beautiful, old-school style Japanese onsen. We opted for a room with a private onsen and we were staggered at how large the room was (on two levels). The private onsen bath with the garden was simply stunning. The food at dinner was also perfect, as was the breakfast the next day. Loved the Yukata service too. The staff were very attentive. The free drinks area also great. Highly recommend.

Traveling here by bus was a nightmare. It was really packed so our group had to stand the entire time and it takes over an hour from the main station in Hakone. You won't have to worry about missing this place since the bus will call out which onsen resort is at each stop. It's a little isolated so make sure you bring some snacks since there is nothing nearby and they don't provide many snacks. I saw many locals come prepared and carrying a bag of snacks. I wish they had milk as an option for drinks!

I loved how well-kept the building was considering how old and historical it was. I loved the staff because they make you feel very welcome and it's very hospitable. They do speak English and do a great job communicating with our group on how to use the onsen and going through our dinner and breakfast meal. When you approach the location, there are people outside the building who assist to help you find your way. We had a private onsen and it was fantastic for those who may have tattoos or are a little nervous about getting naked in front of strangers! I bravely tried the large public onsen that was available which was great because you can really spread out and the changing area is so nice. They provide so many nice toiletries for you to wash up before getting in. The private onsen is scorching hot in compared to the public so make sure you take your time and add plenty of the cold water. I love how your muscles and skin feel afterward. The scenery around the area was beautiful and peaceful. You get to relax and detach by having a drink and looking out into the garden area. Our group's favorite thing in our room was the kotatsu. We went during April and boy was it cold up in the mountains. Hanging around the kotatsu was so cozy and we would lay down and play games. There are unlimited drinks there such as alcohol, juice, tea, etc. I loved the small game room they had that allowed guest to try traditional Japanese games. The meals are fresh and delicious! You also get to choose a yukata to roam around the area, which is super cute and fun to take pictures in. I can't believe this is considered 3 stars! They deserve so much more!

Not on main transportation line, requires some planning and connections. Taxi from JR train station was 10000 yen.

Traditional food was exceptional. Accommodated some western elements in certain rooms and dining tables. In-processing was delightful. Public areas were beautiful and interesting. Room with private hot springs bath for those uncomfortable with public nudity. Bus stop for nearby attractions.

If you are taking the bus to get here, hire a luggage courier service! It was a bit of a trek to get to, but so worth it once we did.

This is a beautiful, traditional hotel. The property is nicely maintained and very clean. They have complimentary drinks during the day and evening. We had the dinner and breakfast at the hotel, both of which were delicious. I appreciated they explained each dish and provided a printed brochure to learn more about traditional Japanese cuisine. We chose a room with more Western style beds and they were very comfortable. We had an onsen in our room, so we didn't check out the public and private onsen for reservation in the hotel. The onsen in our room was great and had a window you could slide open to watch the hills and birds outside. Great customer service and friendly staff.

The room we booked we believed we were being served dinner and breakfast in our room, however the meals were actually served in the public area, which was fine, but not what we expected from booking the photos. It is a lot to spend per night, however it was worth experiencing. It is hard to get to via transport, so I recommend to hire a car for the day. We did it and we are very thankful we thought ahead.

The dinner was the highlight for me. It was everything I could have imagined. The onsen was also nice. Opened at 6am so I could enjoy 1 onsen at night and 1 in the morning before we finished our 1 night stay. The room was spacious ofcourse.
