Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BelgiumNothing, all good already. People from neighboring rooms are however comparatively frequently met because of shared facilities and ryokan typical thin walls. We had a friendly bunch so everything was very pleasant. :)
The guesthouse was a great ryokan with an awesomely large selection of English, Korean, and Japanese board- and card games. It was looking very nicely and clean. The staff was very helpful, polite and friendly, as it is almost Japanese standard. :) Overall a highly recommended stay.

JapanUnfortunately, the room we stayed in was very close to the road and to the reception, so basically impossible to sleep at night. Furthermore, the room had no windows so very smelly and a lot of dust. We left with a running nose and itchy eyes for the allergy, impossible to breath inside.
Good position, very close to Kyoto station. A lot of buses in the area, with bus stops right in front of the Guesthouse.

AustriaThe property states that it has a shared kitchen, which is a bit misleading, as it only has a sink, a water cooker and a fridge. It’s not possible to cook anything apart from heating convenience food. (Which I think is ok but then don’t write shared kitchen in the description) Also, the bathrooms, toilets, shower are located outside. In winter it’s therefore freezing, as for the sinks there is not even a door to keep some of the warmth inside.
It’s a cute hostel, with focus on board games. So if u are travelling in a group and have bad weather, it’s really nice trying out some new games. Though I felt most travellers did not play at all, the games only being decorative purpose. The traditional tables with a blanket attached were super cozy!

PortugalThe toilets and shower are in the lower floor which makes it a little bit inconvenient especially when you have to go to the toilet in the middle of the night. Although it was not disgusting at all, it could have been cleaner. There was dust under the bunk bed and the showers could be a bit cleaner as well.
Nicely decorated hostel with many games available that I regret not having had the time to play.

AustraliaI just don’t think it’s for me to stay in a 6 bed dorm. noisy and little room to have you bags etc. you do get a small locker for your personal items. towels etc are extra but that’s why it is so cheap!
staff were friendly and allowed me to leave my bags earlier than needed. free tea and coffee easy to get to train station, 15 min walk

United StatesThe owner is not friendly. He didn’t show even a single smile. The faucet of the sink where you wash your hands and brush your teeth is too low to use and the guests I talked to and I were not happy about it. I used the kitchen sink instead.
The house is filled with traditional Japanese stuff. Very neat and warm atmosphere.

MalaysiaIt wasn't mentioned in the description that paying at the establishment meant you had to pay by cash as card was not accepted. Could have been a big problem if I didn't have enough cash on me!
SUCH a cute guesthouse! Toilet shower and bath were clean, bed was comfortable with good heating, the kotatsu in the common area was the comfiest. Drinking water tea and coffee were available at all times and shampoo and soap were also provided. Many convenience stores nearby and the no 50 bus is almost directly opposite and takes you directly to kyoto station. Other bus stations are a short walk away too. There is a public bath nearby as well.
