Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SingaporeNo television but this should be a plus for people wanting to get away for a well deserved break.
This is a truly amazing place. We stayed at a similar concept hotel at matsumoto but BYAKU blowed us away with the level of service and standards in term location, full board dinner and breakfast, landscape, onsen facilities, not to mention the charming old town that beat all the old streets we visited during our two weeks long holidays. Thank you BYAKU for the good hospitality.

United KingdomWe found it quite difficult to work out which building it was when we arrived but they spotted us and came out to say hello. A useful landmark is the red post box very near by.
The dinner was amazing, beautifully presented and delicious. Breakfast was more of a challenge for a western palate but there were plenty of things we could eat. The property is beautifully done. We visited the bar after dinner to try some Sake. The lady running the bar was great. We really enjoyed the onsen. Narai is a beautiful location and well worth a visit.

AustraliaThe hotel exceeded my expectations, it was beautifully appointed with great facilities. The heated outdoor bath and private balcony where a highlight, as was the food and frendliness of service. The hotel is located along one of the most picturesque streets I've ever visited, close to great hiking trails and outstanding natural scenery. I would absolutely recommend this property to anyone visiting the region.

United StatesByaku is without peer - best place I stayed in Japan. Staff were wonderful, food is out of this world. All the attention to detail was fantastic. If you have dinner there be sure to ask for their homemade gin (with cedar and various local woods, brewed in a huge jar) - one of the best things I've ever tasted.

Everything! Our room was amazing with our own private garden, the staff were lovely all of them, the food was totally unexpected, what you would get in a 5 star restaurant. This gem in the middle of a tiny town was amazingly good. If you can afford it, do it.

SingaporeWe loved everything but needed to be careful on the stairs to the bed. They are very steep.
A traditional style which takes you back in time. The room was gorgeous and the outside bath was a bonus. Great coffee in the room, comfy bed and pillows and nice toiletries provided. Food was amazing and we enjoyed the taster bar.

NetherlandsByaku Narai is located in a beautiful historic post-town. During our stay it snowed, which added to the fairytale-like atmosphere. The rooms are modern, nice and spacious and immaculately clean. We particularly liked the large shower and the private outdoor-bath. Restaurant is lovely also, although breakfast was challenging to our Western pallet (but hey, it’s Japan!).

This is an exceptional hotel. I’ve been all over the world, and this is by far my favourite to date. The buildings are so thoughtfully restored and appointed. Every surface, texture, colour and sight line has been exquisitely curated. A stunning collection of amenities full of local heritage. Ultra comfortable lounge wear, divine bedding. An amazing private onsen bath with three types of products including sake lees from the local brewery. I just felt so calm and at peace. Polite, cheerful and respectful staff to top it off. Dinner at the attached restaurant was INCREDIBLE - local produce lovingly prepared and so amazingly flavourful. I chose the matched drinks and each one enhanced the flavour of the food. At least 3 times I thought ‘what the f just happened in my mouth’. Dreaming of that meal still! And the breakfast!!! I stayed here as my first stop on a four day Nakasendo Way trip, I wish I could have stayed here the whole time. I stayed in the Uehara-ya building, room 111k
