It is always nicer when the fire is lit in the bar but I guess it was late summer not early winter so I do get why it wasn’t

Superb location after day 1 of cbc ride from Whitehaven Always super helpful and accommodating I have found - this is my 6th stay

Breakfast was excellent - really good choices. Evening meal was good value for money and large portion. The only reason I did not score The Cumberland higher was because there was a lot of untidiness in public areas. Evening the breakfast room had things piled up in the corner. We had to pass the office and another staircase to get to our rooms and both were really cluttered. So it was the little things that let them down. But an enjoyable stay.

Bedroom a bit small. Crack on the wall. Duvet too hot and no sheet instead. Entrance hall dowdy and unkempt. The hallway and passage to the the bedroom was dark and felt in need of decoration and up-dating.

    Lovely.

Everything was fine and just as we expected!

So we ate evening meals and breakfast and both were well cooked with good ingredients and well and very nutritious. The pub is in an old market town and reflects its position in the town.

The heating was switched off. It was terribly cold. I had to sleep in my coat and wash and dress in the morning aan unheated room.

Lovely, very spaceous, bright room with a stunning uninterrupted view of beautiful open country.

The rooms are a little bit dated but still clean and comfortable. Because of the age of the building the location of the plug sockets is also fairly limited. Mostly a restriction of the building though and it didn't diminish our stay at all!

Friendly and helpful staff and a really great pub. Good beer, good atmosphere, good food. You can (and should) pre-order breakfast the night before which speeds up the process for everyone involved and is particularly helpful if you want to head straight off! Pack-up lunches are available on request and again, you can order what you want the evening before.

The room needed some TLC as there was visible cracks in wall and fixes that needed touching up. The pillows need replacing as became flat quickly. The bathroom was useable but needed renovating and the shower could have been better. Towels were clean but the bathmat had visible marks

The food was exceptional both tea and pre-booked breakfast. Staff were lovely and couldn't ask for nicer people. The layout of the building was unique and made a difference from traditional pubs. Rooms were small and quaint but had everything you need, kettle with a selection of tea and coffee (bonus for hot chocolate and biscuits) hair dryer and a comfy mattress.

Ideal cheap half way hotel on our C2C. Pub meal and local pints were spot on with a nice lively atmosphere at the weekend. The room was fine clean and comfortable. Full veggie English breakfast set us up for a 2nd day of cycling.

Shower wasn't the best but it got us clean. And the room was clean but worn. The bathroom was absolutely tiny with the sink touching your knees on the loo! I also struggled with the feather duvets as I find them really itchy and scratchy.

The staff were brilliant, providing secure storage for our bikes and very welcoming. Lovely atmosphere in the Inn and very good breakfast. Best on our trip cycling C2C. Great they had a triple room as we were cycling with our 13yo son.

Best place to stay for miles around
    • Leisure trip
    • Family with young children
    • Triple Room
    • Stayed 4 nights

Alston is struggling economically like much of the UK, with dead shop frontage and three of the six pubs shut. That's not the fault of the Cumberland Inn though. On a Monday night the Cumberland Inn is the only place that sells hot food for miles around.

Very friendly pub and staff. Outstanding breakfast cooked to order. Alston is surrounded by high fells and the roads are empty, unlike the Lake District.
