We didn’t realise that our room was in a separate building (not a problem) but up two fairly significant flights of stairs. This wasn’t a problem for us but our arthritic pooch did struggle and had to be carried up the stairs. The breakfast experience was slightly marred by the lack of staff. There only seemed to be one person running the service which also incorporated checking out guests that were leaving and dealing with the public who also came in for breakfast. This was particularly evident on the last morning when there was one chap on his owning dealing with guests plus a party of 9 workmen and several other people breakfasting outside. This lead to a long wait and an incorrect order received. I had a problem with super vinegary hollandaise sauce and a fish pie that was off the scale hot served with a huge pile of cabbage that was undercooked and cold with limp samphire! This wouldn’t put us off returning though as we had a wonderful stay overall.

The property is in a fabulous location right on the quay and you can get the ferry across to Instow daily. We were lucky to always find a parking space in the car park. We had a lovely big family room with a large king size bed and wonderful views. The bathroom was big and very well decorated. Nice little touches including biscuits, milk and tap water complimentary with a selection of items to buy too. The decor of the pub was lovely and there was good outside space at the front, side and rear (perfect for sitting in the sun). The food was a little hit and miss but my husband enjoyed the full Devon breakfast that he had every morning. The breakfast options were good with a fresh selection provided each morning in the bar.

It's popular so would be even better if there was a bigger car park. We struggled with public transport options around the area.

Really helpful staff, special thanks to Pete, a friendly town, all in all a great weekend with lots of walks and interesting vistas of the estuary and further afield at the beaches. Highly recommend this hotel for its location within the village itself as well as the facilities, ambience and the team.

They could do with swapping out their spinach on the vegan breakfast, it tasted like it was tinned rather than fresh. Could even simmer it with tomatoes and freeze it if frequency is the issue.

Room was immaculate, location was great. Food also generally really good. Hosts are all lovely, especially Michelle.

This is the second Young’s with terribly hard pillows. Go to the chiropractor’s the next day hard. Also, our room had very poor ventilation. Steamy with a shower and stuffy hot at night. Couldn’t open a window because we were at street level and passers-by were looking in.

The location, the food and the quality.

Breakfast could start at 0700 or 0730

Brilliant customer services! Staff couldn't have done more to help. In terms of breakfast, because it starts at 0800 and I had to leave before then, they provided a breakfast box which was great. Only criticism is the time for breakfast.

Food quality variable - some really great some absolutely not - seemed to be a bit of a relaxed attitude from staff about food. Towel radiator didn't work in bathroom - we reported it so maybe it is fixed now.

Great location with views over the estuary. Spacious, light airy room (room 10) but also warm which we needed given the weather! Plenty of storageto unpack things to. Convenient to be able to get food on site and great choice for breakfast. Staff pleasant.

Above and beyond, amazing with our dog Bruty (custom meals for your dog), staff excellent and went well out of there way to keep us happy! Pub and area of Appledore was beautiful. Nice friendly characters within the pub and a fantastic happy workforce that worked well together. Young’s should show extra care and attention to keep these staff happy! Will 100% be back! Thanks Tony, Thanks Fisher.
