Breakfast and dinner that was provided was really good. Staff was really attentive and welcoming as well. They prepared decaf tea for us, even making sure that the meal was catered to what you asked for (no raw food, no beef etc). They helped us to parked the car, and even help to clean the exterior of our car! Room was great to experience local culture. Private onsen facilities was wonderful as well, just need to queue for it.
Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni
Kurokawa Onsen Yama no Yado Shinmeikan features 5 hot-spring baths, including a 30-metre long cave bath. Located in the centre of Kurokawa hot-spring area, it offers Japanese accommodations and free WiFi at the lobby. Free shuttle is available to/from Ogunimachi Yu Station and bus stop Kurokawa. We spent 3 nights at the Sotetsu Fresa Inn Nihonbashi Kayabacho hotel after arriving in Japan (There is another Fresa Inn in the area, so make sure this is where you have your reservation). It is a relatively modern, functional hotel sometimes referred to as a business hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was very small as is typical in Tokyo but very clean and functional. The hotel is convenient to Tokyo station (20 minutes walking as a reference). After arriving on the Narita Express or by others means to Tokyo station, follow signs to the Tozai line (sky blue) subway. The easiest way to know which direction to go is to look at the numbers representing the stops. The Tokyo station stop at Otemachi is T-9 and you want to go to T-7 Kayabacho. Leave the Kayabacho subway station via Exit 7 and the hotel is just around the corner. From Kayabaco or the nearby Nihonbashi station, you can get all around Tokyo on the highly efficient subway system. Use a Suica, Welcome Suica or Pasmo card to enter and exit subways and avoid the hassle of figuring out which ticket to buy or how much they coat. Just tap and go. Enjoy. Kokura,Onsen EXPERIENCE JAPAN LIKE THE JAPANESE We decided to spend a couple of days in central Kyushu to enjoy a traditional Japanese ryokan experience. Boy, was that a great call! I88We stayed at the Yama no Yado Shinmeikan in the Kokura Onsen area, which is an hour north of Aso city by bus. The ryokan is 130 years old but is clean and well-maintained. It features a total of 5 unique onsens, including one carved into a cave. The ambiance is terrific and the staff is super friendly and helpful. The ryokan is located along a flowing river and the sound of running water adds to the relaxing quality of the stay. (The Fuji room is best). All accommodations are traditional Japanese tatami rooms which are made up for sleep each night by the staff as you enjoy the onsen baths.

Gorgeous traditional ryokan, with beautifully appointed rooms—we had one of the en-suite onsen baths, and I highly recommend it! The dinners and breakfasts were sumptuous and almost too much food, all very delicious. The staff is friendly, impeccable, and very helpful. The area itself is also lovely, with plenty of shops and nearby onsens to explore.

Super friendly welcome. Great traditional Japanese room. Stargazing, a traditional robata (firepit) and fireside sake were complimentary. Outstanding kaiseki cooking. It was so good that we are recommending it as a honeymoon destination to our family.

The onsen was amazing, we truly appreciated having the option to book a private room for ourselves, as this was our honeymoon. Great ryokan with indoor and outdoor onsen and comfortable rooms. We had the breakfast which was very nice, no problem in having it vegetarian too. English is a bit of a problem but manageable.
This is not your typical ryokan but a modern one where nobody will wake you up at 7am for breakfast. Here, you can (almost) sleep as you please. 9 bungalows for 9 rooms. Each room has its own private onsen, one indoor and the other outdoor, in addition to the bigger "public" one. Staff is great. Dinner is superb, and so is breakfast. It's far, a bit remote but you must go for a peaceful and very charming moment.
Multiple public onsen (main, cave, river, indoor), multiple private onsen available, garden around the ryokan
It was wonderful that they had an outdoor onsen pool by the riverside where you can see and listen to the man-made waterfall. The number of private family onsens were also pretty good, less waiting time for a private onsen bath.
Service was excellent, staff were very friendly and welcoming. Both dinner and breakfast were exceptionally delicious, wide variety of dishes and we were very full after both meals. Private onsen inside the room was spacious and clean. the room itself was generously large too. Out of all the ryokans I have stayed in Japan, this room was one of the largest. The ryokan is located just a 5 min walk to the main area where you can see the lanterns illuminate at night. Highly recommended!
Great Ryokan! Way beyond my expectation - 3 private onsen rooms you can use without reservation and 2 public onsen. - Rooms are spacious, new, and comfortable. There is Kotatsu table in the room, very warm and cozy! - There are lovely facilities you can use and experience such as star observatory, library, and the vintage fireplace room that has free sake serving! - Staffs are very polite and helpful.
First stay at a ryokan- a unique Japanese experience. Had a very relaxing stay overall and the location of the ryokan is perfectly situated to explore Kurokawa. The staff were extremely helpful and tried to explain things the best they could despite the language barrier. The indoor onsen was small but relaxing, it made my skin feel really nice the next day. I personally didn't try the outdoor onsen however my partner did and said that the smell was quite strong.
Clean, spacious room with comfortable futons, amenities and everything included. Private onsen hot enough, indoor and outdoor onsen was clean, big and free flowing. Small ryokan so it is quiet and intimate. Service was attentive.
This was my first ryokan experience and the staff took great care in explaining all the procedures and expectations to me :) They were very sweet and assisted me in any request. The room, while one of the smallest, had plenty of space and faced directly onto the river. The private onsen and public bath were great; I specially enjoyed the outdoor onsen. The food was of very good quality and plenty. The Kurokawa Onsen village is quaint for a short afternoon stroll.
Great ryokan experience in a traditional small onsen town. Good availability of onsens both private and public, but even had public onsens to myself as a private onsen. I can highly recommend the outdoor onsens. Also makes a good base to visit Mt Aso for walks.
