Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni
Situated along Tanohara River and surrounded by tranquil nature in Kurokawa Onsen hot spring area, Oku no Yu Ryokan offers charming Japanese-style accommodation and various hot spring baths. It also boasts a thermal-heated indoor swimming pool. Free WiFi is provided in public areas. • Onsen : The best I've tried so far (together with Gero). Has a really nice smell (unlike Beppu lol) and the temperature is perfect. There are also many different separate onsen baths which you can have for yourself for 1 hour if you ask. • Food : Overall great, standard Kaiseki meal (served in a dining room where each room is separated by a small movable wooden wall) • Staff : Very helpful and gave me the option to opt out of my room and go for a smaller one (cheaper) since my friend cancelled last moment and I ended up alone. • Location : As you can imagine, a great natural onsen is often in the countryside, you do have a bus that goes from Aso station (Kumamoto) all the way to Hakata station (Fukuoka) which stops by Kurokawa which is helpful. The ryokan's staff also pick you up at the bus stop if you inform them of your arrival time.

On top of your own onsen (in our room), there were very lovely common onsens for women and men separately. The Kaiseki dinner was very good.

The staff were incredible, very attentive to every request- including building an entire vegetarian menu (!!!) with local ingredients for my wife (we did notify beforehand). The food overall in the dinners was outstanding, we stayed for two nights and had two completely different dishes. The private onsen was amazing, just what you need after a long day out.

They helped us to parked the car, and even help to clean the exterior of our car! Room was great to experience local culture. A variety of Japanese shochu liquor, wines and other drinks can be enjoyed at bar Kura. Beautiful Japanese ryokan with amazing Onsen hot springs. The included dinner and breakfast were unique and excellent, mainly consisting of traditional local cuisine that enhanced our overall express. One of the best highlights of our Japan trip!
Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni
Situated in the centre of the Kurokawa Onsen Area and boasting a total of 8 indoor/outdoor hot spring baths, Nanjoen offers traditional Japanese-style accommodation with tatami (woven-straw) flooring and futon bedding. Gorgeous traditional ryokan, with beautifully appointed rooms—we had one of the en-suite onsen baths, and I highly recommend it! The dinners and breakfasts were sumptuous and almost too much food, all very delicious. The staff is friendly, impeccable, and very helpful. The area itself is also lovely, with plenty of shops and nearby onsens to explore.

Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni
Boasting spacious indoor and outdoor hot spring baths surrounded by lush greenery, Ryokan Wakaba provides Japanese-style accommodation in the peaceful mountain area. Free Wi-Fi is offered in the public area, and parking is available for free. Excellent Ryokan, a perfect stay… Rooms spacious (northern annex), and wondefully appointed, with all the comforts (japanese style futons, but extremely comfortable). Personal onsen was an adequate size (it is possible to reserve other private onsen at the ryokan). Fantastic, cozy closed verandah by the river…. All was immaculately clean, and futons are removed/laid during breakfast/dinner. All meals in Kaiseki style were excellent and in a two night stay there was a different menu on the second day. All personnel was extremely nice, polite and attentive. Star of the show was the rotemburo, perfectly set in a secluded part of a “valley”, protected by trees, at the same time private and airy (compared to other rotemburo we visited on our onsen hop, much better). Location is great, near the main road but totally silent at all times, and about 5 mins walk to the centre of the village (a bit of a climb on the way back) Would return again tomorrow and two days stay was absolutely not too much….

having hot spring bath at outdoor onsens was a excellent experience, both dinner and breakfast were perfect in presentation and taste, keep it up
It's an exceptional ryokan with very calm ambience. The staff is very friendly and helpful, offering a free ride to the bus stop. Onsen facilities are of high quality.
* excellent location, in a quiet part of the onsen town between a lot of trees * open-air baths were very spacious and opened up to a small river * indoor bath was easy to use * kaiseki menus were quite delicious even for western tastes * we liked the indoor decorations of the room and the tatami area was convenient, it didn’t extend to the whole room
Shinmeikan is a truly amazing ryokan/ onsen. The whole building just oozes authenticity. Great tatami style rooms overlooking the river, super friendly staff who will help you with all your needs. Great onsen baths, especially the cave bad is spectacular. Dinner and breakfast are equally high quality and display a variety of Japanese cuisine. Absolute perfect place if you want to experience traditional Japanese onsen style ryokan.
We had an unforgettable family stay at a traditional Ryokan in Japan. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the staff, who made us feel right at home. The serene atmosphere of the Ryokan, with its beautiful tatami rooms , and peaceful environment, provided the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Our family enjoyed the delicious kaiseki meals served in Ryokan and loved relaxing in the private onsen. We highly recommend this Ryokan to families looking for a unique and authentic Japanese experience.
The cave onsen was a unique experience. They have private indoor n outdoor hot springs for booking. The English speaking female non-japanese staff was very friendly and pleasant. The ryokan also sent us to the bus stop when they learnt we are taking the bus to Hakata. Dinner was served around a fire place, giving a warm, fuzzy feel.
Loved how large and comfortable the rooms are and after days of tatami mats and futons, the Western style rooms here are a good change. The dinner buffet has a good spread and the food was good! Plenty of choice for all. Onsen was nice too.
The overall experience of staying in a ryokan with onsen, dinner and breakfast included and clothed on Japanese yukata give us taste of what it was like in a Japanese home. Upon our arrival, we were welcome with Japanese tea and dessert. It certainly sets the tone of our stay and warms our heart.
Super friendly and comfortable ryokan we stayed! I must say this is the ryokan have to stay in Aso! Although room without bathroom, but room comes with bigger space and basin and toilet! Our baby has so much fun to enjoy in tatami room, and also we enjoyed so many times in private onsen! Breakfast and dinner is delicious! I’d love to come back again!!
