Located in Kumano Kodo, one of many ancient pilgrimage routes registered in UNESCO World Heritage, the ryokan is a couple minutes’ walk from Kawayu Onsen Bus Stop and a 10-minute drive from Kumano Hongu Shrine.

This was one of the best hotels I stayed at in the Kumano Koda area. It exceeded my expectations from the moment I arrived. The staff at the front desk were very helpful and went out of their way to assist me with travelling around the area. They have a free shuttle bus to take you to the Hongu shrine town. My room was awesome and the food in the restaurant was fantastic for both dinner and breakfast. The best part was the outdoor onsen overlooking the river and mountains and being able to wear a light wrap in it as it was mixed with males next door. The view was spectacular. Some staff were able to converse in English.

Looking for a property with onsen?

Featuring traditional Japanese hot springs known as ‘onsen’, these hotels allow you to take a relaxing soak in therapeutic geothermal waters. Traditionally, onsens were located outdoors but a number of hotels also offer indoor facilities for private or shared use. The healing properties of each onsen will vary depending on its location, with ‘kuroyu’ black water known for its positive effects on skin.

Very convenient. Had everything you needed. Washing and dryer. Loved the private onsens. Indoor and out door. Private bunks felt very private. Stairs and not a ladder for the top bunk. Get the bento box for dinner as there isn’t food options in the town. Very clean and organised.

Well located next to the hiking trail. We arrived late after sunset and left early, so can’t say much. The rooms were very clean, the showers are private onsen which was nice. They provide some basic dinner and porridge for breakfast which was very kind.

The room was large and offered western seating. The view from our room was lovely overlooking the river. Outdoor onsen was excellent! It was very clean and well maintained. Food was ok. There was plenty offered however was not all to our taste. Some of the gish was overcooked. Being given a western breakfast on the second morning was a pleasant surprise!

The indoor gendered onsen was really good and of a very soothing warm temperature. The outdoor onsen is mixed gendered so doning the bathing suits provided at the indoor onsens, families could onsen together and bask in the outdoor stoney river sights.

the quality of the food was amazing - the variety of foods was top class - the three types of onsen were very enjoyable. I particularly liked the outdoor onsen - the staff who helped us catch buses were very helpful- the location right on the bus route and right on the river with the hot springs was wonderful.
