Elmbank York, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, hotel in York

A boutique Art Nouveau hotel in historic York. Minutes from the heart of the city, overlooking the Knavesmire Strays, lies the Elmbank Hotel, a unique 19th-century mansion with a rich history.

Hotel is decorated in a wonderfully eclectic style, so much brighter than the normal beige/grey/taupe you normally see! A real feast for the eyes. Reception is well organised and efficient. We had garden room which was well set out and appropriate size. Beds were comfortable as was room temperature. Shower room was excellent, very clean and water pressure very good. Breakfast in main dining room, self service with good selection. York centre is a 25 minute walk along the main road - flat and with good signage. Would recommend if you want to stay 'in' York but prefer not to stay in the city centre.

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Historic busy, many many places to visit. Tourist trap, and entrance fees to many attractions expensive especially with visitors with children If you search around you can find "Pub price foods" otherwise eating is costly. York is a fine city to visit especially "The Minster" but again entrance fees are costly. Town heavily trading on its historic past.

Its a place with full of history and amazing sculptures and quiet city during weeks and busy during weekends. Best to take a trip of a mix like Thursday to Sunday. After leaving the city we feel like to go and visit one more time as we left something behind.

We stayed in York for 3 nights which is just right to view the city. A visit to York Minster is a must and do get a guide as the cathedral is steeped in history. Half of the stained glass windows in the UK are in York. For good pub food visit the historic Three Tuns (first licenced in 1782) - friendly, nice ambience and yummy Yorkshire Pudding. For those inclined, go round the city on the ‘Cat Hunt trail’ and find the cat statues scattered across the city!! Walks along the river and in the parks are pleasant too.

Lots of historic buildings and interesting history. Many pedestrianised areas full of lovely old streets to explore such as The Shambles. Loads of great restaurants and wonderful pubs! Excellent shops. York Minster and walking the city walls are obvious highlights. The Museum Gardens and park and the river are also beautiful. Very friendly locals. We had a highly enjoyable stay and would definitely return.

    I've been to York before.

I've been to York before. I only stayed this time as I wanted to visit Castle Howard and was unable to within a day due to their limited opening times. I was glad I was leaving on Saturday though as the hen parties were arriving. How to put someone off a place in one go.

I just loved all the stuff you can do.

I just loved all the stuff you can do. Most of the things I did were history based, but the chocolate tour from the York Cocoa Works was very informative and just a bit different. Not sure the Van Gogh Experience was really worth it, though it was interesting as a small museum. I used a York Pass which made it significantly cheaper to do things and also meant that I didn't need to think about costs of the activities while I was there. It also meant that I was able to squeeze in extra stuff when I had the time.

We chose this hotel because of the good reviews and location and on site parking, unfortunately the only room available was a twin, best nights sleep I've had since we were married, the beds were so comfortable, room was a decent size en suite with everything you needed, even a fridge and small freezer compartment. And a fan. Really nice cooked breakfast in the morning. 10 min walk to the Minster and city centre. Staff were really welcoming and helpful, we will definitely book here again next time we come to York.

This is a fabulous hotel. A fascinating and rather unique interior - beautiful wooden panelling, gorgeous stained glass window. The restaurant is gorgeous. I know that a lot of local York folk eat here on a regular basis. Really capable, consistently friendly staff. The rooms are really well appointed - little (but really great) things like literally the most impressive irons I've ever seen (they have HEADLIGHTS?!) - a safe, etc, etc. Can't recommend enough. 4 star hotel at 3 star prices.

Great location overlooking the Shambles shopping street, with easy walk to all the sights of midtown York. 500 year old pub/hotel with lots of character. Our room and bathroom were huge, with interesting furniture and everything including the floors a little crooked. Really very charming. The bathroom had quite modern and lovely facilities while maintaining a sense of its age. The bar was pretty interesting, with a suite of armour in the hallway.
